Has anyone here tried this feature of MR Home?

I don't think I had ever noticed this feature in my (paid) Home edition of MR v.8. Has anybody given this a shot?

Yes, a while back. Don't know if it made a difference. I think I still had to do a little driver cleanup, in particular getting cores identified correctly IIRC.

Has anybody given this a shot?
No, I have never found any need to. Windows itself is pretty good at sorting out which drivers to use when transferred to dissimilar hardware.

When I restored the image of an Intel-based machine to an AMD-based one to create my System One below on first boot up it found all the correct drivers to use. They were already in the system's library of default MS drivers, it didn't even need to go online to find them.

This used to be a really useful function back in Windows 7 (and W8 days to some extent) as W7 was poor at handling hardware changes.

However Windows 10 onwards driver handling is far superior and it is fairly rare you need to use redeploy feature these days.

I have actually restored my images between 3 different machines (if that is what you are asking about). As long as your license is linked to your Microsoft account, activation will not be an issue (at least from my experience). But of course each of my machines have their own licenses attached to my MS account.

So, if I understand you two correctly, when I get a new machine and already have my Windows 11 installation set up the way I want it (with a gazillion adjustments and tweaks and all of my uninstalled - portable-type - software in place), I can Image my main disk (this machine) and "restore" that image to the new machine, and I have a good chance of this being successful?

Windows updates normally include basic drivers for your specific hardware. So, yeah it will work.

yes. I have had a number of complete hardware makeovers carrying over the same OS since Windows 7 days.

Once it got the CPU cores wrong in device manager, but all I had to do was remove the drivers for them in device manager and redetect hardware changes, and it picked up the right core types.

I've used it quite a few times to restore to dissimilar hardware. I disagree a little with some of the other answers. If you restore a backup to a totally different computer without using that feature, all the old drivers, dlls, etc will still be in the new computer because they are part of the backup. Windows might find the new drivers and work, but why would you want a bunch of unused drivers on your system? Why would you want to chance having a conflict of some kind. That's just asking for trouble. When you use the dissimilar hardware feature, you start out clean.

Whatever your concern is regarding unused drivers is not really a big concern. The bigger concern are bloatwares if you are restoring an image from an off the shelf system. They really cause a slow down, big time and specific only to the machine they came from.

Moving to a new machine in Win10 is extremely easy, and you can always try to update 7 to 10 before the move for older equipment although 10 updates are not successful 100% of the time.

Speaking of which, there's actually a trick in moving systems located on old MBR style HDD's to boot in new GPT style boot restricted equipment very easily. And I search for it from time to time but I have never seen anyone else talk about it. Only ads for tools. So here it is...

My preferred method is to boot into a rescue media directly on the machine but you can do this live with docked drives.
Always do a full backup before working with disk sizes\layouts if possible
You may be using tools for the tasks but this way you are in full control and not relying on a "magic fix" as you will know what needs to be done.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS - Admin cmd prompt - C:\> powercfg /hibernate off <--on original system and shut down properly

1.) Install dummy windows partition in GPT layout on NEW(GPT) disk
2.) Make sure OLD(MBR) disks windows partition is smaller than NEW(GPT) disks windows partition (shrink old Win partition if necessary - you can do this in Disk Mgmt or with a tool)
3.) Clone OLD(MBR) Windows partition overwriting NEW(GPT) dummy windows partition

9 out of 10 times thats it you're done and it will boot. In the rare case that it does not you will need to fix the boot files. You will need to assign a drive letter to the efi system partition. to find it we can use diskpart These work in recovery cmd prompt as well as live cmd.

If it knocks you into system restore instead of booting this will work as well. Also, the Windows location will not be c:\ if you are using docked drives so keep that in mind. The actual partition clone is easy to explain, this next part is very simple once remembered, it is not as bad as it looks.
C:\> Diskpart

We can abbreviate we only need to type the first 3 letters of diskpart cmds. i.e. List=lis partition=par

Diskpart> lis dis <--Lists current disks attached to system
Diskpart> sel dis x <--Replaced the X with 0 or 1 or 2 etc, probably 0. Make sure you are picking the correct disk #, this can usually be done by looking at the size but you may need to look in disk management with the drives docked)
Diskpart> lis par <--Lists current partitions on selected disk
Diskpart> sel par x <--Replaced the X with 0 or 1 or 2 etc, This partition is usually labeled SYSTEM and is usually between 100mb-500mb but can vary on diff systems.
Diskpart> assign letter=q
Diskpart> exit

C:\> cd /d Q:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot

C:\> bcdboot C:\Windows /s q: /f ALL
C:\> ren bcd bcd.old
C:\> bcdboot C:\Windows /s q: /l en-us /f UEFI
C:\> bootrec /rebuildbcd

Then reboot and you're good.... We only need the tools to do the "clone" or partition resizing anymore...

TL;DR Clone the MBR Win Parition to the GPT Win Partition and fix the boot with bcdboot if needed

Thank you @glasskuter and @Mark Phelps. Glasskuter, I like your way of seeing this issue. I think the MR program has something to offer above and beyond the ordinary Restore operation when they call the procedure ReDeploy.

@badrobot: Hey man, I'm not reproducing a store-bought mess. I'm talking reproducing a finely-tuned, vastly personalized, fully work-ready, lean-clean-mean Windows 11 Pro system from a three-year-old daily main-machine to a new PC with nada on the disk (cuz I'll let the ReDeploy process wipe it first). I do understand what you're sayin', though.

@BobOmb Thanks for all that effort on my behalf, but I'm using Macrium Reflect (as in the OP), and all I was checking on is whether a feature in Macrium Reflect is well known around here, since I've never tried it, but I'm going to give it a go soon.

The collective support level of this forum community is incredible.

I have, several times. Works well, it's how I created my System One in My Computer below,...
Bree said:
I used Reflect to restore the C: partition from a system image of my old Legacy/MBR machine to replace the C: partition of a clean install of the same version of Win10 on a new UEFI/GPT machine. Then used the Reflect recovery usb's 'fix Windows boot problems' option to rebuild the BCD. The end result was a transfer of my complete system to a new machine, not just my user files but all my installed software and configurations.

I have effectively got exactly the same PC as I had before, just with every part of its hardware upgraded.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
