Has anyone out there struggled with ucrtbase.dll in their travels?

Thought I had seen it all in my 30+ years messing around with Windows - but just when you think that - another impossible issue lands in your lap.

Long story short - I have a brand new MIDI keyboard here in the studio from Native Instruments that I have been struggling with for almost a week now. For this keyboard to be fully recognized by the system - there is a system service app called NIHardwareConnectionService.exe that acts as the official translation layer between keyboard and their VST host environment (Komplete Kontrol).

Once correctly installed - this Hardware Connections Service - is supposed to fire up, run in the background and off we go enjoying our new keyboard.

But over here - ON a squeaky clean new Windows 11 25H2 build (done on July 24) - when I finally got around to setting up this new board - I get this:



This app will not - run at startup (or anytime) no way -no how - as soon as it interacts with the latest "ucrtbase.dll" that is supplied by Windows 11.

I have done three days of troubleshooting, removing Visual C++ libraries, running Profile Monitor stack traces, analyzing crash logs with WinDBG - everything possible.

Sent in reams of reports to Native Instruments support and even those guys have no idea what is going on.

Now - is it possible that this specific ucrtbase.dll:



Is actually faulty? Could be. But this file is in use worldwide by probably hundreds of thousands of apps every second. I suspect an issue with the NIHardwareConnectionService.exe itself - but NI has a point when they say that hundreds of thousands of users worldwide are using their keyboards AND this service - just fine.

Has anyone come across such a bizarre crash in their travels. I really thought I could get this sorted and now I am seriously considering another full rebuild of Win 11 25H2 and start over clean.

Appreciate any insight you may have on this weirdest of weird scenarios.

i found this to download the latest version of ucrtbase.dll

Thanks but these are super ancient. The most recent version out there is 10.0.18362.815 - dates back to 2020 - before Win 11 even appeared.

This library file is (I believe) critical to numerous OS and app operations and ideally should be kept (reasonably) current.

The current version - as noted above - is 6 years newer (07-24-2026).

This file is also governed by TrustedInstaller - which makes it fun to try to replace - IF I was going to do that.

Since I cannot verify what might happen by jamming a super old version of ucrtbase.dll - into a super new Windows 11 25H2 ISO I built 10 days ago - I can't really afford to take a chance and possibly fall into more issues while the first one is still not solved :)

According to Winbindex, the previous 24H2/25H2 version of UCRT is 26100.8521 (from May Preview 2026 or June 2026).

You can try installing June 2026, and disable updates to see if NIHardwareConnectionService still works.

But I have now confirmed with NI support that they are running the latest UCRT and they are having no issues with the HCS.

I believe this is all "me" and not really this file overall.

Gonna start a clean install here again and take another run at this.

Have you run the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow commands? And if that doesn't work, reinstall the application.

DISM/SFC at least a half dozen times and I have uninstalled/reinstalled the last 5 versions of the app.

All exhibit the same behavior.

Update:

Wanted to stop by and report that is issue is solved and here is what NOT to do - should you even purchase a keyboard (or any other device) that uses Unix sockets to communicate on a Windows 11 25H2 (or higher) machine

Issue: NIHardwareConnectionServices. exe crashes at system startup -and lays the fault for the crash on a Windows Universal C Runtime library (ucrtbase.dll)

Root Cause: The guy that is experiencing this error - built a custom version of Windows 10 25H2 (in NTLite) last week - in prepartion for a new digital audio workstation build this week.

For reasons still unknown - he thought it would be great idea to uncheck this component when building said ISO:



With this component removed from the operating system - the service in question - will never run. Like ever.

Resolution: The guy that experienced this error (tail now firmly between his legs and dining on a large plate of crow) - rebuilt a new 25H2 ISO - including this Unix Socket component - and proceeded to reinstall the operating system from scratch AND all the required Native Instruments apps and services. His shiny new keyboard instantly snapped to life and is operating as designed.
