Solved Help me change Outlook from IMAP to POP

Hello, friends,

I built this new PC some months back. I've recently noticed that when I installed Office, it set up my email as an IMAP account rather than as a POP account as I had on the old computer. This has become untenable to me. I need to keep a bunch of old emails rather than having them synched with my earthlink mailbox.

When I uninstall and reinstall, it still uses IMAP. If I try to add the same email as a POP, it complains that the address is already set up.

I have a few more things to stumble around on, but I think it's best to ask somebody smart before I start stumbling.

It would help to know what email provider you are trying to setup.

This information may help, I use IMAP, or commonly called Webmail, in my Browser.

The ISPs in my area provide both.

Unless there are 100's or 1000's, save them as .msg

The ones I want to keep I move into a separate folder from the Inbox.

I stumbled and fumbled around until I was finally able to find how it was set up in my wife's computer, which uses POP. It took me a while to figure out what I was even looking for.

I think I finally got it. for next time I'm trying to do this, or in case anybody is looking to set their email this way on earthlink, it should be:

POP.earthlink.net port 110
SMTPAuth.earthlink.net port 587

Seems to be working so far. I'll mark this one solved in a day or so.

EarthLink POP3 Settings
Incoming POP3 settings are unique to each EarthLink domain. The format is pop.(domain name). The outgoing server is the same regardless of domain.

1. Pop Incoming Server: pop.earthlink.net
2. Incoming Port Number: 995
3. Incoming Security Setting: SSL/TLS
4. Authentication is Required: Use your full email address and password.
5. Outgoing Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net (same for all EarthLink domains)
6. Outgoing Port Number: 587
7. Outgoing Security Setting: STARTTLS
8. Authentication is Required: Use your full email address and password.

Note this, Dave: Optional POP3 Email Setting: Leave a copy of Messages on Server:
You can leave a copy of messages on the server by selecting your email client's "Leave a copy of messages on the server" option. This is usually found at the bottom of the settings page or under an Advanced settings tab. Most email clients offer a secondary option to allow you to set how many days you want email to remain on the server or to remove messages only when deleted from your email client's Trash or Deleted items folder.

Dave, did you ever find the old PST file?

I made a PST file just before I started this effort, and I have one from the middle of last year.

I got something screwed up when I reinstalled office. I think it's because I didn't do outlook setup manually to make it a POP account. I'm not sure exactly what I have to do in order to do so. I've somehow ended up with three copies of my inbox and calendar, so I need to uninstall and start over.

if you want to use an old PST you generally should do so from Control Panel. I have to dash out, either someone will point you in the right direction or I will when I am back home.
Whatever you do, make sure you have backed up your PC and especially the original PST file for safe keeping.

You can import a PST profile in the current setup, then remove the current one, again, I’ll hope someone shows you how or try to help when I return later today.

I am going to need time with this. What I have done a hundred times before, ended up with me totally screwing my Outlook up. I can’t responsibly write you a step by step guid if I can’t successfully follow it. I don’t know what I did wrong, I am about to load a backup of Windows.

In that case, I think I'll wait until you get a good install. (Makes me smile a bit to know that a certified expert can screw this up just like I did.)

Not an expert but I have done this enough times to wonder where I went wrong, Dave.

Dave, I believe I have issues that I will have to look into further regarding either my Outlook or my PST. Right at this point in time I cannot afford to reinstall Outlook.
It’s 1am here, at some point tomorrow I am going to take a look at some free PST merge software to see if it may be a viable option for you.

I would sure appreciate any help, and maybe merging an old and a new PST would be a good solution. In addition to the calendar problem, I have also lost all my contacts. Thanks!

Another explanation of the files involved, maybe the .ost would work?

I haven’t forgotten you. I have a computer issue and have been having to use my iPad. I can’t test the free software to merge PST files via my iPad.

Edit: I might wait till my wife is asleep tonight and test using her Lenovo.

Hi Dave.

I have tested 5 PST Merge software. I need one more day. I apologise because I have had a ton of work come in and it’s taken much of my time outside of simple replies here.

So far, Systools PST Merge is winning but it is limited. It will cost you $39.00 for a full version. I suppose it depends on how important it is to you. Anything free was either on a trial or not up to my personal standards. Even with Systools it only merges the first 15 entries. My PST files are over 1.5GB each so it was very limited. Also, I can not afford to test the PST file result but I trust it was successful. Not ideal I know, but I already screwed my outlook last week, I can’t mess with it again.

I’ll post more on that later today, hopefully. Again, apologies for the delay.
