I'm experiencing a very strange issue inside of windows explorer. I could really use the fix because its beginning to drive me nuts.

Inside Windows Explorer, at any given time (I'm not sure what sets it off, I've had theories and did some trial and errors but to no avail) the main pane, and the sidebar go completely numb I'd call it. I wouldn't say frozen because of what exactly is going on, but it is in the frozen/crash family, and I need some advice/help/solutions please.

Here's whats going on. I could be browsing a folder in explorer and then all of a sudden, I'm not able to click on anyfile. It's almost as if explorer is about to crash and restart, but it doesn't. I am able to fully navigate explorer from the top area where the tabs are (I can open as many more new tabs as I want and they are not frozen) I can press Back, Forward, Up and Refresh. I can go to the address bar and change the directory I'm in. I can use search. I can press copy, paste, cut, etc. I can add a new folder, and see it inside the root folder. But i cant click on it. ANYTHING BELOW the commands for cut copy paste view and sort is in a hybrid state. For instance, I cannot click on anyfile, instead of being blue, its stuck on gray and it won't move. However, if i minimize and then restore and immediately press the tab button, I am able to navigate through the files with my arrow keys. The second i try to right click on anything, it "freezes" again. During this time, the entire sidebar (quick access) is "frozen" as well. Although, the tab workaround also works with the sidebar. I am able to navigate the sidebar using arrows, but the second i go to press any file it greys up.

Explorer doesn't crash or restart, and I can't seem to find an issue in event viewer. This is making it very difficult for me to track down the culprit. If i add a tab and close the current "frozen" window, everything is all good again (until it happens again).

I've obviously ran sfc /scannow . chkdsk which didn't return with any errors.
Glary Malware, Wise 365, Microsoft Defender, and various other tools to detect the issue have been downloaded and nothing is telling me what the problem is.

Can it be a context menu issue? I dont know, sometimes the freeze happens when just scrolling through files and not actually right clicking them. I thought for sure I had down when i did 2 clicks of my middle button of the mouse, and the explorer froze. I had procmon running and recording to tell me what was going on. I was super excited. I then came to realize, procmon didnt have an answer, and when I tried to replicate the double click, it never froze again. So that theory is gone. After that i began to notice every time it happens, I have 2 instances of explorer running. 2 separate folders - not in the same tab. But then again, its happened when theres only 1 window open, so theory gone. What's driving me nuts is that if it was once in a while okay whatever, i close the tab i open a new tab life goes on... but in the last 20 minutes it happened to me 4 times. I've tried ccleaner, shellexview, rightclickenhancer to look for bad context menu items. I've reinstalled windows doing a repair install. The real problem is that I don't know what triggers it, so it'll be hard for me to turn off all services and do a quick boot. I have no idea what sets it off so I won't know which service is messing with it, if it is a service in the first place.

I guess what I'd like to know is, a) Has anybody ever heard of this ever? I've never experienced this issue in the past, and all of a sudden it's an everyday occurance. b) if you have heard of it, did you come across a solution. b2) if you haven't heard of it - what do you recommend that I haven't tried? Is clean boot easier than I'm dreading it to be? I just have no clue and I ran out of ideas.

Perhaps it is some shell extension, but I can't recognize whats causing it. I just.. I just don't know!

Thank you guys for reading and watching the video and replying and sharing anything at all that comes to mind, because that just may be the fix!

Welcome to the forum, I would try troubleshoot using a clean boot. However, depending on how often it happens, a clean boot might not work in your situation since a clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. . If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one
An alternative is safe boot, but in safe boot you do not have control of disabling startup programs in order to identify which one is causing the issue.

Exactly how often does this happen?

For interest sake; Are you able to create a new user profile and test behaviours there? If it works fine, the issue is likely profile-specific

yeah i am able to, however i dont think its the best idea because of the circumstances on WHEN the problem happens. And thats just the thing, I have no clue, so I'd have to make a new user, spend time actually logged in with that user, but at the same time cannot use my apps thats on my main account because i want to see if it's app related or windows related. you feel me? then what would i do without my apps? just browse explorer all day long? See the issue lies in the fact that it could be 5 minutes after i boot up windows or it could be after 10 hours consecutive on the thing. theres no cirucumstances or patterns i can find that can give me a heads up or point me to a direction. in fact it just happened again a few minutes ago, and i actually have noticed the pattern that almost everytime it happens, i believe there are 2 separate explorer windows minimized waiting for me to pick the one i want, and whenever i go to the older window, and then spin around 3 times do 4 left mouse clicks a summersault and punch a hole in the wall, then this happens hahaha.. imagine?

I think the best thing would be to do clean boot for lets say 2 days straight. and if i dont' notice it in those 2 days, one by one turn the services back on, and continue for a day per service to see if its the cause.

either that or im going to delete every single registry entry for 3rd party context menu and see if thats breaking it.
like im in full "no idea is a bad idea - experimentation" mode on this. before each thing i try i make a restore point just in case i need to restore back and i give it a shot.. its becoming realllllllly annoying.. at first it seems like the computer is lagging or whatever, but then you realize nope! just half frozen in a weird no right click allowed state of mind.

Powershell:
Get-WmiObject Win32_SystemDriver | Where-Object { $_.PathName -like "*dll*" -and $_.State -eq "Running" } | Select-Object DisplayName, PathName

Some third-party software installs low-level input hooks (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Accessibility tools (screen readers, zoom software)

  • Check Task Manager > Startup, Services, and running processes for anything that’s non-essential or odd.

what would i do without my apps
Not all, but a lot of 3rd party installable apps install for "all users" and would be in all apps list.

Here's a suggestion that might come in handy sometime, a shortcut that will kill and restart a frozen unresponsive file explorer without the need of restarting or ruining your wall. It will kill all explorer instances.

On your desktop create a shortcut with a target of
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & start explorer.exe

Name it Kill Explorer, assign it an icon, and a keyboard shortcut key if you wish (I made mine ctrl + alt + k) but I forget to use it.
You can use the Keyboard shortcut key OR pin it to your taskbar if you use the mouse as much as I do. I had a similar freezing issue when I was on 23h2 and had to use it fairly regular. I haven't had the problem since I've been on 24h2, but I did do a clean install.

I totally agree with @antspants . I have a second user test account on all my computers. It's the quickest, easiest way to prove the direction of an issue in a lot of cases.

not trying to be rude at all, but this problem didn't start when i installed windows 11 pro, it started like 3 weeks ago. if i were to make a new user name and do the type of tests that i could on my normal account through the process of clean boot for a day or 2 and then add a service until it breaks, i feel like it wouldn't solve much. imagine i make a new user account and windows explorer doesnt break. is that supposed to mean my user account is currupted? nah i just think that means that the new user account wouldn't have the software installed that would cause the issue, essentially leaving me in the exact same place as i am. clueless to what the cause is.

i just figured there may be a less insane way to do that. forgive me for thinking perhaps someone has heard of this before or had this happen to them to which they know of a fix, and while browsing through the forum they stumble upon this thread and give me their two cents.

as you can see from my original post ive tried to pin point this in many ways, willing to do whatever seems reasonable to get results, and honestly speaking if you want the truth, i think making a new account would be a waste of time. but hey that's just me.

You also spoke as if I implied that this new account would be my permanent account, telling me its only for a few days. bro with all due respect, you don't know me - DO NOT talk down to me in a condescending passive aggressive tone. I'm not a child. I'm just trying to think logically, and diligently. I appreciate your suggestion though, but never once did I assume this "new account" you asked me to make would be my primary.

once again though, like i said - anything helps, any suggestions could be a factor in locating the issue so i do appreciate yours, i just didnt feel the comments you made. They werent necessary.

Get-WmiObject Win32_SystemDriver | Where-Object { $_.PathName -like "*dll*" -and $_.State -eq "Running" } | Select-Object DisplayName, PathName

Some third-party software installs low-level input hooks (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Clipboard managers
Mouse gesture tools
Productivity overlays (like DisplayFusion, AquaSnap)
Custom file explorers
Accessibility tools (screen readers, zoom software)

  • Check Task Manager > Startup, Services, and running processes for anything that’s non-essential or odd.

i got a usb 3.0 hub with just 4 ports, one is for a fan stand for the laptop, 1 is for WD 2 tb game drive, 1 is for wireless keyboard/mouse (k400) - not that i use it so much, and the other port is empty.. and then my charger is on the otherside usb c port plugged in, and last remaining usb c port empty

I haven't had the problem since I've been on 24h2, but I did do a clean install.
this is a nice tool to have thank you for that.

something is keeping your drive busy... eliminate which drive, which device then add them one by one after the problem is fixed
