This tutorial will show you how to always show or automatically hide the ribbon toolbar in the Paint app for your account in Windows 11.

Starting with Paint app version 11.2511.281.0 and higher for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11, Microsoft is introducing the collapse toolbar feature in Paint to Automatically hide toolbar or Always show toolbar.

Option One

Always Show Toolbar in Paint app


This is the default setting.


1 Open the Paint app.

2 Click/tap on the Show toolbar button at the top. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on the chevron icon at the bottom-right of the ribbon, and click/tap on Always show toolbar to check it. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Automatically Hide Toolbar in Paint app


1 Open the Paint app.

2 Click/tap on the chevron icon at the bottom-right of the ribbon, and click/tap on Automatically hide toolbar to check it. (see screenshot below)

3 Once the toolbar collapses, click/tap on the Show toolbar button to bring it back and switch tools. To hide it again, click/tap on the Hide toolbar button or anywhere outside the toolbar. (see screenshots below)
