How can I setup WiFi and MS Store from command line without a pre-exiting network profile XML?

I have a script that it almost perfect. It automatically does all of these after Windows setup:

Install all system drivers
Sets regional settings
Performs Windows customizations
Installs apps (both standard and Microsoft Store)
Installs Windows updates
more

I have just two minor hiccups:

1) Some of these tasks require Internet access. In this instance, I am working with WiFi so I have to put a pause in my script to allow me to manually connect to a WiFi network. So, my first ask is for a way to script this setup without needing a previous network profile.

2) Again, some options require a logon to the Microsoft Store. I can set this up manually but would love a way to logon the first time from a command line.

If I can tackle those two small details, I will then have 100% touchless setup of Windows including Windows installation all the way through configuration.

1. OOBE already has a Wi-Fi setup screen. Don't enable HideWirelessSetupInOOBE
2. Related to #1, stop using SkipMachineOOBE if you're an old-timer.

3. GitHub's winget-cli doesn't require any MS Account to download free Store apps. That was a feature request fixed in June 2022.

Garlin, thanks for the response. But, a few things of note:

1) I am trying to do a 100% unattended setup (with a custom sysprep image) so there is no OOBE section visible. I suppose I could live with that, but hey, I'm just trying to learn what might be possible :-).

2) I'll have to try seeing what happens if I don't sign into the Store. Almost everything I install is el freebo, except a couple items (most notably office). I guess I could live with installing Office later.

Thanks again.

I'd be interested in said script for future use. I clean install a couple times a year minimum, and this sounds a lot like what I'd want as well.

No worries. I'm still in the process of debugging and I'll have to write up some instructions so just bear with me!

I have this one little machine that is a perfect testbed. Low power Celeron system. It came with just 64GB of MMC storage space, but it had an open NVMe slot. So, now I have an NVMe as the primary and the 64GB is devoted to being a Windows bootable image, drivers, apps, and this script now. I'm about to test and hopefully be able to start finalizing this.

I'll get this to you as soon as I can, hopefully in the next day or two at most. Maybe it will give you some ideas, or maybe you can tell me where I am being stupid :-)

Garlin, just a little feedback on this. I've found that not all free apps work this way. I ran a test this afternoon on an ASUS laptop. All of the ASUS specific apps fail, specifically noting that there is no MS Store account.

But that's okay. I'm to a point where it's "good enough" now.

Thanks for the info!

It's working now, but only when I logon to Store. That's good enough. I just pause my script and display a message noting that user needs to connect to the Store one time before proceeding. Would be nice if there was not an interruption for that, but I can live with it :-)

I have a script that it almost perfect.....

I have just two minor hiccups:

1) Some of these tasks require Internet access. In this instance, I am working with WiFi so I have to put a pause in my script to allow me to manually connect to a WiFi network. So, my first ask is for a way to script this setup without needing a previous network profile.
This article might give you some clues. Apparently you need something called 'ICD'....
....Automatically create the WLAN profile through a provisioning package applied during the OOBE of a Windows installation (that’s done through the Image Configuration Designer / ICD or “Set up school PC” apps).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I'll get this to you as soon as I can, hopefully in the next day or two at most. Maybe it will give you some ideas, or maybe you can tell me where I am being stupid

No rush, I do love to tinker.

As for you being stupid - that'll never happen.

@garlin,

I see what you were getting at. In my further experimentation today I discovered that I was indded able to install free apps with winget, but that was on my desktop system. I finally figured out that the reason for this was that on my desktop I have winget 1.5 but a new install of Windows only gives me 1.2.

Next came the challenge of trying to figure out how to upgrade winget immediately after a clean install of Windows from a command line. For some reason information about that is extremely hard to come by but I figured it out.

Home free, right? No. To upgrade winget you have to signed into the store!

So I'm back to square one.

End result is that I have this script that does a ton of great things but I can't avoid one interruption forcing me to sign onto the store.

Hopefully Windows 23H2 will include a newer winget.

According to that info, source adding is supposed to be there, and the command for it is there, but I don't see a way for it to make use of GitHub, as of yet. The upgrade argument does have an attribute to pick the source, but trying to use winget to upgrade winget is not playing nicely lol.

Why not script it to grab it form GitHub?

Any idea how? The problem I run into going that route is that this is an MSIXBUNDLE package. As a result, I run into two issues:

1) There seems to be no switch to install it silently. It pops up a dialog making me interact with. That defaults the whole purpose.

2) Even if I do interact with it, it refuses to install. Forgive, I don't have the exact error but it's something along the lines of this app uses advanced features for which it does not have permission.

but trying to use winget to upgrade winget is not playing nicely lol.
Yeh, I have that working, but only if I sign on to the store. I think I'm simply going to move on for now and live with having to sign on to the store. Hopefully 23H2 ships with a new version. Then this all becomes a moot point.

Most users don't understand the magic of WU...

The inbox (or ISO) version of winget is 1.2, and very limited. WU begins to update all your UWP (Store) apps in the background, about 10-20 min. after your first logon. App Installer gets updated to a more usable version.

Do a clean install, go enjoy a slice of pie and return to see the difference.

If you don't want to wait 10-20 min. then you need to force update winget on your schedule.

1. Download App Installer package and its dependencies. DISM integrate the packages to install.wim
2. Run one of many PS installer scripts which grab GitHub winget.

Yes, winget will probably rev in 23H2 (but to what version?)

As for the MSIXbundle - if we can figure out how to get winget to use github, that may be moot with the above.

Current preview is:

PS C:\Windows\System32> winget -v
v1.6.2291-preview
PS C:\Windows\System32>

Also, will it update store apps if you don't actually log in?

Finally - I cannot find winget in store apps, only Winget-Autoupdate-Configurator. I've always installed it from GitHub myself, but Store search is also pathetically bad lol.
