How can i tell if my laptop is going into hibernation?

I have a HP Omnibook 14 wunning Win11, it has the Snapdragon X Elite CPU

I have set up the power options to go into Hibernation after 10mins (Sleep set to never!) however I think it is going into Sleep and not Hiberation. Why, well the power indicator on keyboard flashes, power up is very quick and most importantly the battery drains at about 1 to 2% an hour.
This weekend I did a test, charged to 100% then unplugged and left the laptop, after 10mins it does it's thing and I leave it for roughly 48hrs. I presses the power button and it's quick to respond but checking the battery status it's at 21% and the power graph shows no apps used but a steady decrease of about 1-2% battrery so it does seem to be in Sleep and not Hibernation.

Rechecking the power options and in settings and Control Panel show sleep not set up and it should go into Hibernation.

Is there a way to check in event viewer if the device was in sleep or hibernation as it seems they both get reported in event viewer as sleep. I checked this with my main PC running Win11 which does go into hibernation and it reports as sleep.

So anyway to check or even make sure hibernation does happen before I wipe the OS and see what happens on a reinstall.

Have a look to see if hiberfil.sys file exists in the root of C: drive. It is a hidden file and to see it you will need to set File Explorer to show hidden files.
If it is there then the laptop is hibernating but look at the date to see when it last went into hibernation. If it isn't there then it is not hibernating.

In Control Panel change top right from Group to Large icons to see them separately. Go to Power Settings. At the left side click on What happens when you press the power button (I don't remember the exact words). Make sure it is set to Hibernate, not Sleep, both for pressing the button and for closing the lid.

Does your computer use S3 Sleep or S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle]?
The response to this command will tell you [any cmd or PS window will do]
PowerCfg -a
Select the text in the results & post them in this thread [or post a screenshot of them].
And please tell us what time you have set in Power options for Turn the display off.

If you use Bitlocker with pre-boot authentication, an indirect way would be to see if you need to supply the password or USB key when you resume. If you do, you hibernated, and your drives were locked the whole time. If you don't, you slept, and your drives remained unlocked.

The event log should have a record of the power transitions.

Hibernation is like shutdown. The power and HDD LEDs should be both off, no activity at all. When powering on you might briefly see a message that it is resuming from Hibernation and should take some seconds, not instantly like when sleeping.

You can tell the difference between waking from Hibernation and waking from S3 Sleep in Event viewer records.

Checked the hibernation file and it shows it is being used, also here is output as requested from Powercfg /a which does show Hibernate being used.

So it does look like Hibernate is being used so just have to find out why battery is losing it's charge. For example yesterday afternoon once it had had got 100% charge I left it and woke her just just to check the powercfg /a and post here. Battery lost 25% overnight.

Do a simple experiment. Let the computer hibernate. Remove power cable from PSU, wait several seconds. Put power cable back and switch on the computer. If you have exactly the open windows and apps you had before, then it was hibernating. If all you see is your desktop after login, then it was sleeping and by removing power it was turned off. Whether the power LED goes completely off or blinks or changes color, is different for each motherboard.

And only hibernate.
You do not have any sleep states in your computer.

I think you need to check the event log using the method I gave you a link to in my post #7.
I think you might find that your computer is not even entering hibernation at all. It's merely turning the display off.

I'm also quite baffled by the absence of any sleep states other than hibernation.
I do not know what that Device Guard is.
Run PowerCfg -a again after you've reinstalled the display driver & removed/resolved Device guard.

If I was faced with my computer not obeying power options, not sleeping/hibernating when it was supposed to, the first thing I'd do is reinstall the display driver.
- This used to be standard MS advice for sleeping/hibernating problems.
- I'd get the latest driver straight from the graphics card maker's webite.

After lots of messing about I could not find the problem, so I reinstalled the OS and this time it is going into hibernation and there is no battery drain.

Probably Windows Update had messed system drivers beyond fixing. To prevent it happening again, manually check regularly for driver updates at manufacturer's site and install them before Windows Update has any chance to replace them.

This never used to be essential but now is.
- I saw WU replacing updated Intel & Nvidia manufacturers' drivers with much older ones.
- WU used to check & compare release dates of drivers in order to decide if a driver it held should be installed or not. It clearly does not do that anymore.
