How can I view the last action in Win 11 before undoing, i.e. see what action that was?

Yes, maybe. In what respect? How to find out / solve it (without extreme effort / risks)?

I don't know.
I'm just translating the directions for you.

I don't use keyboard shortcuts, and I have my Windows key disabled as well.

Do you have a backup or a restore point from before this happened?
Sometimes it's a lot easier to just "erase" our mistakes, with a backup or restore point.

Like mentioned in post #2... it's almost impossible to figure out what happened, without knowing what the error message said.

Most of the regulars on here, use 3rd party backup software, just for things like this.
If we break something... we can just restore from a backup.

Window's System Restore can help a little bit. Try using a Restore Point from a day or two ago.

I'm just translating the directions for you.

Thank you very much!

By the way, I think I closed this briefly displayed window with ESC after accidentally executing it (presumably before the action was finished). If it was only one file that was affected by this action, the probability might be quite high that nothing actually happened.

I don't use keyboard shortcuts, and I have my Windows key disabled as well.
Why this? As a precaution?

Do you have a backup or a restore point from before this happened?
A Win restore point, I guess, not one I could / should use. And I only have problems with this crappy Win and the useless Lenovo anyway, so it would be better not to initiate any actions that might cause such a restore point (which often didn't work for me at all) to be used.

I disabled the Windows key, because I have big fingers, and type, very badly.

I don't use restore points either, but I DO use backup software like these...

I break Windows so many times... I'd be lost without my backup software.

I hope you are right and nothing... "happened".

You could do this to check if anything is broken...

Open an elevated command prompt and run this command...

sfc /scannow

I disabled the Windows key, because I have big fingers, and type, very badly.
I do so to. That alone should actually be a reason for me to deactivate them (not to mention phones). But without it it would be extremely unpleasant / uncomfortable.

I don't use restore points either, but I DO use backup software like these...
Many thanks for the link. Yes, I should use such (I back up my own data only, respectively the most important part of it). But sometimes it was even possible to get a back up working. And I found out, I "am able" to (more or less) set up a new installation, including all of my programs (I almost only use portable ones) within 2-4 hours. So then I almost have the state I had before.

I break Windows so many times...
I assume, that is normal. It's just a very unstable system, that might break any minute, I guess.

sfc /scannow
Many thanks, I will try later (did it a few weeks or so ago because of other problems), at the moment I am copying / moving 2 TB data between two external drives. I'd rather not put a strain on the drives/CPU/memory right now. Everything is very unstable here.

Yes, that's true. If there weren't too many changes from the last backup to the problem.

Like mentioned in post #2... it's almost impossible to figure out what happened, without knowing what the error message said.

Yes, just like me.

I am afraid a restore point wouldn't help at all, because it was about one of my own files that is not on C:.

sfc /scannow
Probably nothing critical:

OK, what does it do? Is there a risk to run it?

No. These commands are all safe.
This one just checks with Microsoft's copy of important Windows files.
It's pretty fast. Less than 5 minutes.

If we ever want you to run a command that is risky... we will tell you that it is risky. :-)

Apparently something was actually repaired again. So obviously the scan before was not enough. Obviously these were files that didn't cause a problem although being corrupted.

I am wondering why there are obviously are corrupted files at all? Why do they break? E.g. because I had to press the power button on the notebook more than once because the notebook stopped responding / not accessible?

But how can files break as they are stored on a drive? Why do they just break? Files don't normally do that, I would think. And even if they broke, why can't Win just automatically grab the last one that worked?

We usually run those commands one after the other. If SFC misses something... DISM... RestoreHealth will get it.

As for "why things break"... who knows.
I don't know if you remember the old "paper" computer spread sheets. But Windows typed out on spread sheet, would fill a gymnasium.

Both of these tools just check for file errors and attempt to fix them.
SFC is Window's "internal" System File Checker. And DISM... Restore Health, is Window's "external file checker".

They are both just tools to help us find and repair any... problems.

If there are too many problems, we would do this...

But you seem to be OK now, so you do not need to do an In-Place Upgrade (repair install). :-)

For Windows 11...

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

@Donk

But... you really should, start using backup software.
Unlike System Restore, backup software works GOOD.

It will save a copy of your current Windows install. Then if Windows does break, you can use the backup software's "bootable Rescue Media" to "overwrite your broken Windows with your GOOD copy.

Microsoft tries very hard to make Windows able to repair itself. But they have not gotten there... yet.
Maybe in 50 years they will learn how.

But then, Windows will probably yell at us like... die Gattin. :D

We usually run those commands one after the other. If SFC misses something... DISM... RestoreHealth will get it.
So obviously one should run them every now and then (as a precaution or so), especially after crashes and the like?

As for "why things break"... who knows.
OK, so the only thing we know here is that they just break at some point.

I don't know if you remember the old "paper" computer spread sheets. But Windows typed out on spread sheet, would fill a gymnasium.
I have never seen, I guess.

SFC is Window's "internal" System File Checker. And DISM... Restore Health, is Window's "external file checker".
So at first SFC then DISM.

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.
So this needs the ISO (downloaded to a USB stick?), not just the files downloaded to a USB stick?

Many thanks for the links and instructions.

Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...
Ah, to the desktop, so it works on a running system.

Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.
I have Win on a partition. Should I backup the other partitions on the same drive? Or are they not at risk?

But... you really should, start using backup software.
For C: (the others I do).

Unlike System Restore, backup software works GOOD.
OK, yes, I assume I can set up Macrium or one of the others to automatically make a backup without too much CPU / RAM / drive use each second day or so to an external drive running all the time so I had not need to care about.

3. I can't find a picture of a stack of spreadsheet paper. :(
4. Yes. SFC then DISM... Restore Health
5. For an In-Place Upgrade (Repair Install), just follow the directions in the tutorial.
6. Yes. :-)
7. Backup software knows which partitions to backup.
8. Yes. Backup software can backup anything... but a Windows backup will backup C:\, the EFI partition and the Recovery partition.
9. You can run backups on a schedule, or just make a manual backup , maybe every month?

Macrium has no free version, any more.
AOMEI and Hasleo still have free versions.

They all do the same job.

HA! I found a picture of the old spreadsheet paper (circa 1980)... if I remember correctly, it was 17" wide (43.18 cm)...
If you typed out all the code for Windows 11, it would probably fill a gymnasium.
The code for the first Nintendo game, Mario Bros. needed a stack of spreadsheet about as high as your... knee.
This is one reason, that it is so hard to make Windows self-repairing.

Image1.jpg Image1.png

In the old days... you would put a box of this paper on the floor, under the printer.
Then the printer could use as much as it wanted to.
Whenever I think of something... BIG... I think of pin-fed spreadsheet paper. :-)

2. OK, I get it, you should probably get out of the habit of accidentally pressing buttons.

3. Does not matter, I try to imagine one. I will start with a small one.

5. Yes, that sounds like a good approach. I once did such an In-Place Upgrade without that ISO, but with the (I assume, single files) downloaded to a USB. So obviously the ISO is faster / better.

6. Sorry, I am not quite sure to what paragraph that refers to.

7. Ah, sorry. I meant: before restoring (Win on partition C:) with Marcrium, should I backup the other partitions. I've sometimes heard that this should be done for certain Win restores/repairs.

And probably all equally good.

Ah, sorry. I meant: before restoring (Win on partition C:) with Marcrium, should I backup the other partitions. I've sometimes heard that this should be done for certain Win restores/repairs.

Backup software can be used many ways.
If you tell backup software to backup Windows, it will backup C:, the EFI and the Recovery partition.

But you can also tell it to backup a whole disk, or a partition on a storage drive, or even the whole storage drive.
Backup software will do whatever you tell it.

In the guide for Macrium... I just showed the pics for how to make a FULL backup of Windows.

This is what my system looks like. I use Macrium to make full backups of Windows 10 and of Windows 11 (separately).
I use the tiny, free program called Karen's Replicator, to "copy" Disk 1 to Disk 2.
I have TWO 500GB 2.5" SSDs. One for Win 10 and the other for Win 11.
Note: I removed the Recovery partition(s). With good backups, I don't really need them.
I only hook up one of them at a time.

I have about 35GB on my C: partition, and my backups are about half that size with the default settings.
Note: With only 35GB on my Window's partition, my backups and restores take a bit less than 2 minutes each.

Including boot time... it takes me less than 60 seconds to switch between the Win 10 and Win 11 SSDs.

The UGLY side of my computer. :D

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
HA! I found a picture of the old spreadsheet paper (circa 1980)

Ah, this kind of paper, yes, of course, I have seen sometimes. But I think it still existed, perhaps even exists today, well into this millennium. Can't be that long ago I saw it the last time.

This is what #6 refers to.

Okey, thank you.

So you use Macrium for the two Win system backups (maybe done automatically) and Karen's program (last update in 2020, but obviously still flawlessly working) to do a normal backup of your own data.

I have about 35GB on my C: partition, so my backups are about half that size with the default settings.
So the backup is compressed, I assume.
