I have comcast and their router(a trapezoidal shaped thing)( Model: CGM4140COM ?). For some reason the 2.4ghz wifi won't transmit. So I thought I'd connect my old Asus RT-AC65 router to it and use that. But I see no way to access that router once connected.

Someone suggested (using the phone app, since the router app (10.0.0.1) won't change it any more) "adding a port forwarding for port 80 to 192.168.0.1"
I could add a port forwarding for port 80 but it does not say anything where I could point it TO, and accessing that addy or 192.168.1.1 times out.

Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

Wouldn't it be easier to just put the old router in AP (access point) mode, setup the 2.4GHz band, and then connect it to the current router with a cable?

I think on Asus routers, it's under Administration. The settings default to WiFi router mode; you would change that to access point (AP) mode. I would...

  1. Reset the old router (optional but useful to start fresh).
  2. Connect a computer to the old router.
  3. Log in to the old router’s settings page (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  4. Disable DHCP.
  5. Enable Wi-Fi on the old router and set it to AP mode.
  6. Set the 2.4 GHz network name (SSID) and password to whatever you want (can be the same as your new router or different).
  7. Set the old router’s LAN IP to something on the same network as the new router, but not conflicting. So if the existing router is 192.168.1.1, set the old router to 192.168.1.2.
  8. Connect Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the new router to a LAN port on the old router. Don't use the WAN port on the old router.

What makes you think the 2.4ghz wifi isn't transmitting? Because you only see the 5ghz in the list?
My router only shows the 5 ghz channel when you go to sign into it. Thats because it uses what they call Smart Connect.
"Smart Connect allows each of the router's 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to use the same wireless settings.
The router can balance network demand and assign devices to the optimum band."

Your router appears to have a similiar setup to mine in this respect.
"The Arris CGM4140COM is designed to broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands under a single network name (SSID) by default.
This setup uses a technology called band steering to automatically connect your devices to the optimal frequency band for the best possible speed and signal strength. Management and setup of this feature, and the gateway itself, are handled primarily through the Xfinity app.
If desired, advanced users can sometimes access the gateway's settings directly to split the bands into separate SSIDs, but the standard and recommended configuration is the combined network name"

peace

Thanks. because I am unable to sign on to the 2.4 one - doesn't show - only the 5g. Some devices need that(2.4) and my phone app would have to be on 2.4 to use their apps. It all seems nuts but it is what it is.

What I did was get out my laptop and plug the old router into it (not the WAN port) and logged into it and reset the wifi to different names and passwords and saved it all, unplugged it and plugged it(old router) into the comcast port (it only has 2 ) and my phone sees both wifi from the asus so I was able to log into it on my phone and test speeds w fast.com and seems to work fine and all the apps seem to load quickly even though the speed is 1/10 of what I get w 5g.

So I have accomplished what I wanted - just can't log into the old router on this computer. But, that's okay.

If you know how to access the 2.4G on the comcast modem I would love to know. Neither my computer (asus mobo) or Pixel 8 can see it and I have named them differently.
Thanks!!!
I'll mark this solved but first wait for more comments. I'm heading to bed now so see what's up in the AM. Thanks!

Shouldn't the existing router be 192.168.2.1

I what I was trying to point out and I may be wrong, but one router 192.168.1.2 and the other router 192.168.1.1 would fail

The 2nd router isn’t in router mode at that point. It’s just an AP.
