Hi guys. I have a Windows 11 laptop currently running 23H2. I have been checking for updates pretty regularly, and now just toggled on "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available". I then checked for updates again, and still nothing. How do I get 24H2? Thoughts and help appreciated :)

If I download the ISO, does it have to be burned to a DVD? My laptop does not have a DVD drive

No. You can upgrade directly from the ISO. The steps in the upgrade tutorial will show you how to.

Thanks for the help and info! With using an ISO to force 24H2 upgrade, are there any pros/cons? Any pros/cons to not using ISO, and wait for Windows Update to let me install it officially? Also, if I go the ISO route, can I choose which SSD to install on? My laptop has 2 SSD's installed and I don't want to lose any of my games, files, etc. Further thoughts and help appreciated :)

No worries. If you do an in-place upgrade with the ISO, it'll just upgrade your current installation on the same drive without losing anything.

It's just a matter if you wanted to wait for Windows Update, or update now via the ISO. No difference.

Just download and run windows download assistant, and it will upgrade to 24H2.

Hey again. I never used an ISO before, especially when installing an OS (In this case, Windows 11 version 24H2). I downloaded the ISO, but am a little nervous about proceeding. Is going the ISO route easy to do? Further thoughts and help appreciated :)

No worries. It's real easy. You basically double click on the ISO to mount it, then run the setup.exe file from it.

Hey again! I successfully ran the W11 ISO, and I am now on Windows 11 24H2, OS Build 26100.1742. Thank you so much for your help! On my C drive, I did see an "Windows.old" directory. Is it safe to delete that and if yes, how should I go about doing it? It is about 29GB on my C Drive. Further help appreciated :)

Just run Disk Cleanup (check ALL the boxes)... that will remove the windows.old folder.

Yeah. It's mainly there in case you need to roll back to 23H2

There are a few updates since 26100.1742
If they give you any trouble... do the following...

1) Disable the option: Get the latest updates as soon as they're available.
2) Restart machine
3) Search for updates.
4) This should allow the Cumulative updates to install without errors.
5) If you still have update errors after this... you have something else causing the problem.


Credit to @boombastik for figuring this out.


After .1742... the WU's broke SFC and Disk Cleanup. But everything else, works fine. :-)
They still work, but they "report" that they didn't.

Some decided to stay on .1742 until MS fixes it.

It seems, that it's already fixed in the Insider's Release Preview channel, so we should probably get the fix in November.

Great news. You're most welcome. :shawn:

You can empty the Windows.old folder if wanted, but if you do, you will not be able to go back to 23H2 if needed.

I'd say wait 10 days when the time expires to be able to go back before emptying the Windows.old folder. This way you still have the option to go back up to 10 days if needed.
