I'm 99.9 percent it worked because those programs are old or simply do not require registry entries. I can guarantee for example you can't do it with Office products - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. You can't do it Adobe products - Photoshop, Lightroom, etc...

Yes, there will be some apps that work, but for the vast majority, especially of modern apps... no, it doesn't work. And why many of us simply don't just cut and paste the Programs Files folders. In fact, I don't even back them up.

After upgrading my desktop from the i7 2700k era to the i9 12900k era and rejoined the insider program I originally started on the Canary channel but 2 builds in the build wasn't compatible with Asus Motherboards so I switched to the Dev channel which seems like a better fit anyway.

I did not like that even though one was in 22631.2338 which is supposed to get all the features it doesn't.

I have a separate laptop set up with quad boot of Windows 11 release, beta, dev, and canary. It's just used for testing but, in general, Dev is usually all I need to test against the latest changes. My main laptop is running Windows 10 (with latest updates). I won't switch to Windows 11 until Microsoft fixes the bugs in Explorer.

The bugs? Be more specific - there are probably bugs in every version of File Explorer going back to Windows 7.

I am not aware of any serious bugs.

The bugs I'm referring to are in regards to setting folder type. You can't set the folder type (aka folder kind) for a whole folder tree and even setting the folder type for an individual folder will not always stick. See these links:

@LesFerch I used File Explorer in Windows 10 and now in Windows 11. I didn't notice Windows 11 File Explorer to be slow or lagging and I've never experienced hanging. At least that's my experience with these two computers.

I really like the way W11 File Explorer works with OneDrive!

When doing a search on my entire drive, yes. But I would seldom if ever do that. I'm usually just looking for things in OneDrive and searching there is instant. The majority of my data is in Pictures and I use Lightroom/Photoshop for that.

The issues don't occur for everyone. It appears that most people seeing these issues have large numbers of files per folder (dozens, hundreds) and are usually media files (music, photos, videos). Of course, scenarios like that will cause delays on Windows 10 as well, especially if the view includes metadata. However, it's clear that there are more issues on Windows 11. The automatic folder type discovery, that applies to "local disks", only runs once per folder on Windows 10. It runs repeatedly on Windows 11 (possibly every time you open the folder). Also, many people see temporary relief from the delays by clearing out the contents of %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations or by pressing F11 twice. Also very telling, is if they access the same folder by going through the Control Panel (which runs the Windows 10 Explorer) the performance is much better. There doesn't seem to be just one cause for the issues, as you can see by the many "fixes" that have been posted in this discussion:

Explorer has been slow for as long as it has existed. For each iteration of Windows, it just gets worse, even if the processing power of my computer has grown exponentially since. I switched to Command line or 3rd party apps a long time ago because of this very reason.

Windows explorer in Windows server 2021 LTSC is (as is the whole system) a lot faster than W11 -- but it's a hybrid sort of OS between W10 and W11 with most of the bloat eliminated -- runs very well as a desktop -- you can get 180 day free trial and then re-arm a number of times. Servers are designed to run better anyway --

Apart from Macrium most of the windows stuff I run works fine on the server version - its worth a trial -- it runs rings around the current builds of W11 for performance although you have to do a bit of initial fiddling to get it to run as a desktoo OS -- e.g remove reboot nag screens, turn on sound and wifi etc etc.

Not better. They're configured to run background tasks as default and have bare minimum services enabled. This causes the feeling that it's a lot faster and more efficient than a workstation computer.

You can configure a workstation this same way too and the effect would be the same.

seriously it just runs mega fast without really having to do anything to it.

I prefer also the "Hybrid" Win 10 and Win 11 interface.
The other thing was it could repair a drive that diskpart or computer-management -> disk management couldn't do qnything with on W11 !! -- disk been running fine for hours now with zero bad blocks etc.
