How many obsolete computers after October

What Linux can easily do though because it requires a far less stringent demanding set of hardware is to run a Windows Virtual machine really easily which runs office perfectly OK-- KVM/QEMU virtualisation on Linux systems is very fast and efficient, is a TYPE 1 Hypervisor (as is HYPER-V but a load more flexible) and you won't have any problems running ANY older versions of Windows (should later Windows versions make your CPU not "runnable") until the end of the universe if you want - also the VM can run easily in the background so unlike Windows where the VM (even on Hyper-V) runs in "the Users address space" a KVM/QEMU VM can run happily in the background with nobody logged on to the host.

I'm a Linux dude, by trade, so boy oh boy, do I know all of it's benefits !!

For years, I firstly tried doing everything on Linux, and then just gave up, due to spending too much time on things like:

a) Sending Libreoffice docs to agents, and they complained about layout, font issues or just screwed up formatting, when opened with MS Office,
b) Linux drivers for some Printers/Scanners not available or just not reliable,

Also tried the Windows VM approach, which will work for many, but when using Citrix in Windows VM, if you are using Zoom, Teams, you will likely get hit with driver/sound problems, in meetings, or laggy sound etc. Skype workplace meetings, was the worst for this.

With less time to waste and hardware so cheap, found it more efficient, to just have 2nd PC running Windows 11.
Be it 8th gen Intel, or cheap and powerful, "incompatible", with the register key/s ploy.

Obviously, corporate, will just swallow the pill, and upgrade h/w as required.
Not always required, as many late Windows 10 machines, are Intel 8th-10gen, or Xeon W-21xx/22xx, all Win 11 compatible.

How about a tablet with a keyboard? :-) I know some of them just have an ipad but many prefer having a keyboard for note taking as well. (eg surface pro - which is a tablet - but there is a keyboard available. The surface pros seem very popular with university students (did my research!) - it was between that and macbooks (which aren't tablets and I don't like macbooks personally so preferred to spend the money on a well specced surface pro - which is more versatile - it can scan documents as well). They all seem to want a macbook though! Or a surface pro. Although some just use an ipad. Apple stuff seems popular but an ipad probably isn't as good for the work needed as Windows.
Wasn't that type of device originally called a "Blackberry"

Cheers

I personally know a few people who still use XP, Windows 7, and one of them uses Windows 8.1 on their computers.
I wouldn't worry about Windows 10 ending support. We all used Windows XP before, we didn't even update it, and it worked fine. So Windows 10 will work without problems for a long time.

Do you need a Microsoft account for a Surface Pro?
I'm not sure actually. I can't remember what we did with stepsons, but it's just a windows "laptop" so I'd assume you can login with a local account with workarounds, as with any other Windows 11 laptop. I'm assuming we set up stepson's with a ms account because it had windows 11 installed already.

According to AI, yes it is possible.

I'm running an old Acer desktop PC in my bed room, a rig I set up 10 years ago, for an entertainment PC. It came in handy after I had surgery. Paid 80 bucks for it used. 8 GB RAM, 1TB spinner, not much else. HD still works. Windows 8.1 runs on it just fine. Too lazy to upgrade. It's a bit of an experiment. I gave it an extra 8 GB of memory and not much else. Here is my finding:

The less you upgrade, update, swap parts, change the OS, tweak, or mess with your PC the longer it will last and run without issue.

Being a PC builder/repair guy this is embarrassing to say but there it is.

I wouldn't update the thing until it blue screened. It doesn't even have a graphics card. Three BSOD in a decade isn't bad. No complaints. Probably the most dependable PC I ever owned. I'm afraid to change anything. lol 😄

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
