WIndows Security is showing me this:

However, there is no such file c:\windows\system32\drivers. It is not shown by Autoruns. How can I find whatever it is and delete it? I'm running WIN64/Home latest build.

How can I find whatever it is and delete it?

wdcsam64_prewin8.sys gets installed by Windows Update as an optional driver update if you have ever used a WD external usb HDD on your system. It is only ever needed if you want to use the WD encryption software that WD supply with their external usb drives. You can uninstall the driver by uninstalling the WD SES Device in Device Manager.

The WD SES Device only shows in Device Manager while a WD usb drive is plugged in. To see (and be able to uninstall it along with its driver) at any other time you need to tell Device Manager to 'View > Show hidden devices'.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Well...this looks like a perfect Catch-22 situation. I make Macrium backups to a USB attached WS "My Passport" portable drive that is only connected when I make a backup. So it looks like every time I connect the drive Windows will install the file that Win Security doesn't like. So even if I find and delete the offending file it will reappear the next time I do a backup.

How does MS think things like this up?

No, it is offered by Windows Update as an optional update. It does not get installed automatically, only if you choose to install it.

If you don't think you can remember not to install it, then you can hide the update with wusowhide.diagcab....

One possibility is that the file exists only in the Driver Store. Drivers may be retained there even after the software that installed them has been uninstalled. I've had that trouble.

Deleting drivers from the driver store is possible, but not simple. Disk cleanup may not help. I'm not sure whether this will help, but it looks plausible.

Nice one - but no joy. IN the list there is nothing with wdc as part of the name, and only 1 Western Digital driver named oem31.imf that I reckon is used for my USB backup drive.

See if RAPR shows it. If so, you can delete/force delete

A Guy

Ah yes, I looked at RAPR some time ago but thought it looked a little too dangerous. But I got it and deleted this one (had to do Force delete):

Screenshot_2.jpg

Now I'll reboot and see if my USB disk still works.

Woweee! That fixed it. And my USB drive still works. Thanks for that suggestion - here's hoping I won't need it again. And thanks to Bree for posing the image showing the same driver name. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this problem.

The driver was from 2017.
Yes, but despite that it will still be offered by Microsoft through Windows Update to any PC that has had a WD usb HDD ever plugged in. I generated this screenshot by plugging in my WD Passport 1TB to a PC that has a clean install of W11 22H2.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

@Birk,

Be aware WD is aware one of their drivers prevents Memory Integrity from being enabled and has since fixed it....

There's also a newer release that addresses Memory Integrity enablement with the older WD Security suite. Also fixed....

That said, I have a WD NAS, and a couple of My Books, and I only use WD Security. No issues here Memory Integrity enabled.
