OS
Windows 11
My previous OS was Windows 7, and the 'Previous Versions' function saved me from overwriting files a few times.

I'm trying to set up the same thing in Windows 11 but am struggling.

From what I understand in Windows 7, restore points (?configured via system protection) were used to enable previous versions. In Windows 11 this is different, and 'File history' is used.

The only issue is, to set up 'file history' I have to have a network location or an external storage device.

Is it not possible to enable 'file history' and therefore 'previous versions' without an external hard-drive/external network location?

I think ShadowCopyView (from Nirsoft) is for you.
you can mount the restore points and browse the files

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

The idea is to make sure the 'previous versions' are held somewhere safely separated from the disk that holds the originals. A disk failure risks loosing both the originals and the 'previous versions'.

If you're willing to take that risk, then you can hoodwink File History into saving to the same disk. Just make a folder to hold the history, then share it. That's now a 'network location' you could use - file history has no way of telling that it's actually a folder on your PC

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.
