Hi folks -

I upgraded a 12 year old HP system a while back to Windows 11 22H2, bypassing the TPM requirement. Runs fine.
Now I can't upgrade it to W11 24H2.

What's the easiest solution without reloading?

I "believe" that the In-Place upgrade can do it, on a non-compatible system.
But since I don't have a non-compatible system... I can't really test that.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
See the relevant thread "Let's install Windows 11 on unsupported systems". It is all discussed there. In short, you must download the latest ISO from Microsoft, disconnect from the internet, mount it (aka Open with File Explorer) and run Setup from Command Prompt:

setup /product server

This will bypass compatibility check and prevent Windows Update from interfering with the installation. Also you must disable any third-party Antivirus and Antimalware and all startup applications (Task Manager, Startup section). To be extra safe, also disable all non-Microsoft services. Press WIN+R to open a Run box and execute msconfig. Then go to the Services section, check the box to hide all Microsoft services and uncheck the boxes to disable the rest. After a successful upgrade, you can connect to the internet again and enable all those that you disabled.


Scroll down to the third option, download the ISO directly.

When the value is set to 1 (dword:00000001), the system ignores the TPM and CPU requirements and allows installation or updating of the operating system even on devices that do not meet the standard requirements.

I forgot to add: if you don't have instructions like in the screenshot, then nothing will help you today. Even if you install it in some tricky way (I read about such craftsmen), Windows will not work.

I tested installing 24H2 on a cpu that lacked the SSE4.2 instruction set here:

First issue was that it couldn't even boot from the standard 24H2 install USB made by the MCT. It gets as far as the Windows logo, then reboots before it even starts the spinning 'loading up' circle.

Second attempt was with my hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB. That at least copied all the files, set them up and got to the first reboot. Same issue, it shows the logo, but then reboots before the circles appear.

Basically, without SSE4.2 24H2 cannot even boot.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

You can install 24H2 on a CPU without SSE4.2 by creating a hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB flash drive, but at first restart it gets stuck at the Windows logo. No known workaround yet. Just install 23H2.

Glad to hear that. I've just tested an in-place upgrade on an unsupported device (a Toshiba Satellite L750 from 2011, my System One on Ten Forums) from Windows 10 to Windows 11 24H2 using that Option Three from Brink's tutorial. That worked too.

Did you see the same warning as I did, the disclaimer from MS?

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:

The only warning I saw was about Explorer Patcher. I uninstalled it and let me proceed.
