How to rename Network adapter name without "(22)": Device Manager

I just installed a brand new copy of Windows 11 on my PC. I can't figure out how to rename the device driver so it doesn't have (22) in the name. It's the only device that has a weird name like that. My OCD won't let me ignore this.

In the old days, I would simply enable hidden devices in Windows Device Manager (like below), and uninstall the old grayed-out duplicate drivers. However, in this case there isn't any old duplicate drivers to uninstall.

I checked the registry, there are dozens of references to:
Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (22) I219-V, it's not really feasible to rename all these registry entries. There should be a way to do this; but, not sure how.

EDIT: Maybe I can uninstall Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (22) I219-V under the Network Adapters section of Windows Device Manager below, then install it again? I don't want to do this unless I know for sure this would resolve the issue; or, there's a better way to do it.

You can rename them in Windows Settings:

Here are all three of mine after renaming, in both Windows Settings and Control Panel:

However, in Device manager they are still gonna be named their normal name. I think the only way to do that would be to find drivers that have the .inf file modified to change what it installs as the display name, but I've never actually tried it.

Hi,

"(22)" number does not correspond to an increment due to hidden devices already present, "(22)" number corresponds to the revision number of your Intel Ethernet I219-V controller :

Code:

@MoKiChUl, thank you for explaining. I don't recommend this for anybody, but I decided to rename the adapter name to Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V anyway. I figured out a simple/quick way to do it. I'm guessing in the next major Windows update, it will revert back to (22); or maybe even (23).

1. In Device Manager, right-click the Network Adapter name: I.E., Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (22) I219-V, and select "uninstall". Do, not select to completely remove files.

2. Open Regedit as "Local System" with either PSExec or NirSoft Advanced Run, then go to:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages\e1d.inf_amd64_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\Strings; and, change

e15a1nc.devicedesc = Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (22) I219-V
to
e15a1nc.devicedesc = Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V

then, reboot the PC. After rebooting the PC all references to the device driver in the entire registry will be Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V from now on.

The more I think about my solution, more I realize what a stupid thing I did. In fact, it's worth it for me to reinstall Win11 cleanly letting it do what it wants. This is a brand new PC and don't want any surprises during the next Windows update.

Thanks again.

Wise decision,

You don't need to reinstall Windows to revert what you did, just :

1) Follow this process to cleanup :

- Uninstall your current Intel Network Connections if you have any installed (via Start > Settings > Apps) then restart your PC.
- Launch Driver Store Explorer (Right click on "Rapr.exe" > Run as administrator) > Check the boxes of all versions of e1d.inf.
- Check the box "Force Deletion" then click on the "Delete Driver" button.
- Press Windows key + X > "Device Manager" > "View" > Check "Show hidden devices" > "Network adapters" category.
- Uninstall Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-V hidden device by right-click Uninstall device (if you find it) then restart your PC.

2) Install last Intel Ethernet Drivers for your controller :

[DRIVERS] Intel Ethernet/WiFi/Bluetooth

- Intel Ethernet Drivers (Drivers Only) :
Drivers - I217/I218/I219
