It's a bit sad when a 10th generation computer is considered too old to produce up to date drivers for! HP stopped supporting it after 2020.

@Hazel123

Did you try installing the driver you linked in post #12, in Safe Mode?

Like this...

1. Disable drivers included with Windows Updates.

2. Download the driver linked in post #12 and save it to your desktop.
3. Reboot into Safe Mode [Safe Boot (Minimal) ]
4. Try to install the driver in Safe Mode.

Another option would be...

1. Restore the last Windows 10 backup you have, or the last backup where the audio worked.
2. Then do an In-Place Upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11.
3. Even though you'll be ON Windows 10... when you do the In-Place upgrade, use the Win 11 ISO.

From what I've read elswhere, the realtek driver is removed when upgrading to Windows 11 25H2

An In-Place upgrade is not the same as a WU upgrade.
Ofc I'm not sure it will allow the old driver, but it might.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
If you can't find a driver that works, give FxSound a try. FxSound | Boost Your Sound Experience Now I have it installed on both of my desktop computers. You may find that one of the presets will do want you want. If not it has more settings than one can shake a stick at.
Yeah FX sound is good, BUT I did stop using it for a while as ONE GAME (Fallout 76) would lose ALL sound after a while (that was over 2 years ago) all is fine now though.

presumably that's because the realtek driver isn't installed?
fyi.. A driver is not required to detect a Plug and Play (PnP) device. In fact, the PnP sequence works just the opposite:
  1. The PnP bus detects a new device and notifies Windows
  2. Device sends Windows its Descriptors. (Device descriptors are burned into the device's firmware at time of manufacture)
  3. Windows uses descriptor data to identify the device and locate a suitable driver. If no driver found, the device still appears in DM but appears with a yellow icon with Device Code=28 ("Drivers for this device aren't detected"). Devices without a driver are called "Other" or "Unknown" Devices". They are listed in DM under a special DM category named Other Devices or, if it's a USB device, listed under USB.
A device may also not appear in DM if the device h/w failed or an upstream device it connects through has failed

1. If you want, Out of curiousity, Open DM. rt click the HD audio device->Properties->Details. Change the Property pull down to show Hardware Ids. Rt click Select All, then copy, then paste the hardware IDs in your next post

2. Can also see if you have any problem devices. Enter msinfo32 in windows search bar, hit Enter. In System Information report, click Components-Problem Devices. If anything listed you can Edit-Select All, then Copy then paste into next post

Thanks. Nothing showing in Problem Devices. Hardware ID's are here

Which seems to be the realtek audio device. Assume it must be working or I'd have no sound. And Windows has just decided it needs an updated driver possibly. But yes, I find it odd it's not showing in device manager. I had already tried "Show hidden devices" and "scan for hardware changes. And nothing to do with realtek audio

I'm assuming Windows has just renamed it to "High Definition audio device" due to using the microsoft driver?

You're correct. Realtek's vendor ID is 10EC for PCI bus connected devices. (Numbering is different for USB. see below) So, absolutely, that's your Realtek audio h/w. Your problem is: Windows can't find a Windows 11 driver for any of the hardware IDs. But it did find a driver that matched one the device's Compatible IDs (you can use the Driver Details pull down menu to also see Compatible IDs)

Hardware IDs uniquely identify a specific device for precise driver matching, while Compatible IDs are general identifiers used as a fallback if no specific driver is found, allowing devices to use generic drivers. Hardware IDs offer full functionality, whereas Compatible IDs prioritize compatibility, often allowing for a single generic driver to handle broad classes of devices. Manufacturers choose the IDs to program into their various devices. That's how they tell Windows which drivers it can choose. When multiple drivers match, Windows has an algorithm choosing best match (e.g. h/w id matches are always chosen over compatible id matches)

In your case, Windows could only find a driver match for the Realtek device using one of it's Compatible IDs. When no hardware or compatible ID matches, you have a no driver found problem. When there's a driver match, Device Manager displays the device name found in the driver file. Good guess! In your case, it used the name it found in the Windows driver. When the device name in DevMgr doesn't indicate manufacturer, you can only be certain finding its h/w id and looking up the vendor id

Two footnotes:
  1. When there's no driver match, Device Manager displays the device with an error icon. In this case, Windows displays whatever name the mfr put in the Device Descriptor. That name is only replaced if a driver found.
  2. You can lookup a mfr name based on a device's vendor ID using a tool like Device Hunt. Note the vendor ID in a USB devices has a VID prefix, not VEN
Glad you at least got sound working!

I'm going to leave it. AI (I know) says it's unlikely to work as 25H2 requires special "servicing drivers" to avoid audio failure after updates. This machine needed a clean install. It worked much better than trying to upgrade from Windows 10. Everything else is fine. The microsoft driver works. I just have less flexibility to increase sound.
I have a hp 14-CE3XXX series laptop, intel core i5 10th gen. Windows 11 24H2. Audio stopped working after windows 11 update. i searched & downloaded 6.0.9700.1 from MSUC. Before you begin don't forget to disable drivers in windows update. Now first Put downloaded .cab file inside a folder, then right click on .cab file & select option open in new window, copy everything inside that window & paste in original folder. then following steps done.
Right click "This PC" & left click properties.
A setting window opens up, on right hand column scroll down to device manager. Left click on device manager, a new window pops up with list of devices installed. Open Sound, video & game controllers. Right click on High Definition Audio & select update drivers. A new pop up comes up select "Browse my computer for drivers" next page select "let me pick from list of available drivers" then select Realtek High Definition driver from drop down list & click have disk, give it path of your extracted folder. Your driver will be installed. I hope this helps

Thank you. I'll bookmark that for now - I gave up as audio wasn't too bad with the ms installed driver :-)

It's a bit sad when a 10th generation computer is considered too old to produce up to date drivers for! HP stopped supporting it after 2020.

my brother has an HP Spectre x360 15-df1033dx {2020, intel 10th gen cpu} laptop, which used to have Win10 but upgraded to Win11 late last year and currently running Win11 25H2 and the audio system there works fine (original Realtek audio driver version on there is v6.0.8720.1; still retained in Win11)
bought it in May 2020 {yup, it's now been exactly 5 years since be purchased it during the covid 19 pandemic}
