After I clean install Windows 11 I did turned off Microsoft Defender in gpedit.msc but it's still on. I did enter gpupdate /force in command prompt as administrator but it's still on, why?

Are you running without any AV? If you install another AV then I'm sure it effectively turns off Defender and takes priority

McAfee is provided free by Bell. I have always installed it on all my computers.

I was under the impression I was getting double protection, but I was wrong!

I am wondering that if Microsoft Defender was up to scratch, why bother with McAfee

If you're relying on the icon in the SysTray as an indication, that may not be Defender, per se.

Go into your Startup options and disable Windows Security notification icon

It is and I agree why bother.
But too many users forget to use their brains and expect any AV to fully protect them.

Why bother with McAfree - whether Defender's up to scratch or not (but which it is, far superior to McAfree).

Even if it did work that way (with both Defender and McAfree), for what McAfree offers, you'd only be getting protection from Defender anyway.

So exactly what we said would happen then. The most effective AV exists outside of the physical computer and installed on the chair in front of it.

No, if you have another AV installed and active then Defender is automatically disabled. You can still do an on-demand scan with Defender and you can also set up Defender to make regular scans. But that is not the same thing as active protection, your other AV provides that.

Microsoft said:
If another antivirus product is installed and working correctly, Microsoft Defender Antivirus will disable itself. The Windows Security app will change the Virus & threat protection section to show status about the AV product, and provide a link to the product's configuration options.

Underneath any third party AV products, a new link will appear as Microsoft Defender Antivirus options. Clicking this link will expand to show the toggle that enables limited periodic scanning. Note that the limited periodic option is a toggle to enable or disable periodic scanning.
Enable the limited periodic Microsoft Defender Antivirus scanning feature

@Atomic77 Norton will turn off Defender. You can check this in Settings>Privacy & security>Windows security and click on any item under Protection Areas. I was always under the impression you could only have one AV to avoid conflicts

For memory resident real time protection that's true. There's no conflict in using any other on-demand scanner to scan your files though, and Defender will still be allowed to do that.
