When I plug in a USB external disk drive, I no longer get a notification telling me it's there. It shows up in Explorer fine, but I don't get a notification.
Mine also opens in file explorer and I no longer see the notification at the bottom right corner.
Perhaps it was due to an update?
I am not in a position to check right now, but what happens if you go into settings and set all media to “Ask you every time”?
Switch to that and plug in your USB again.
Also, as they say, turn off autoplay and turn it on again?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was KB5039302. I am getting the black borders around items I hover over in explorer. That being said, my laptop is fully updated and has no problems at all with this.
Not correct settings, you've indicated that your device should Take no action and/or (nothing chosen)
You need to make a selection that will crerate some action - choose from the pull down menu
Also it would be wise to check the same settings in Control Panel > Autoplay where you can make separate selections for individual media storage types.

Don't get me started on Microsofts genius decision to add black borders. It’s not a bug, it’s by design. It is the reason I uninstalled that update. I went on about it in one of the update threads. It’s not a popular inclusion.

Consider uninstalling that preview just to see what happens, swerd. It should be easy enough to reinstall. I uninstalled it and straight away it was offered again in updates.
