I thought that tabbed File Explorer was only getting pushed out to insiders

Last night I upgraded to the latest dev build of Win 11 on one of my VMs and was pleased to see that I received the tabbed File Explorer so that I could experiment with it.

This morning I started up my primary Desktop system which is running Win 11 22H2, but not joined to the Insider program. I was rather surprised to see that this machine also has the tabbed File Explorer. I'm not complaining, rather happy about that actually, but I had thought that is was only getting pushed out to a subset of insiders.

Anyone else seeing this on 22H2?

Last I saw, actually this morning, is that 22H2 isn't being released to RTM versions until early August. I updated both of my Win11 machines [Desktop and Notebook] Wed. and Thu. and didn't get 22H2, haven't seen any change in File Explorer yet.

Correct, 22H2 is not going out to the general public until later this year, but Microsoft has confirmed the final build and released ISO images, so that is what I installed last month.

I like the new File Explorer, but it still carries over a bug that I reported several times that allows me to crash File Explorer at will. That bug has been there since the release of the very first leaked build and has never been fixed.

Well - that is the latest 22H2 RP Insider version that has file explorer tabs on A/B testing.

RTM is cuurently on 22000.739.

So you either clean installed 22621.160 from an iso or upgraded an Insider version of 22000 at some time.

Either way you are running an Insider version even if not enrolled in Insider Programme.

That's odd. I thought for sure I was on 22H2, maybe because Settings > About says it is 22H2.

Also, I just checked and 22621 is 22H2 - even Microsoft states so. The current releases (including 22621.160) are still considered "release preview" releases, but they ARE 22H2.

EDIT: It looks like release preview and BETA may currently be same builds, thus the confusion.

Beta and RP (22H2) are both on 22621 which is the RTM 22H2 build to be issued soon.

However RP is on sub build .105 and Beta is on a later .160 sub build, despite Beta being issued earlier just to baffle users as to MS release logic (cue gender jokes).

Yeah, I was on an earlier sub build, but patch Tuesday saw the upgrade to the newer sub build get applied.

See this in the release notes for .160 -

We are beginning to roll this feature out, so it isn’t available to all Insiders in the Beta Channel just yet as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone.

2 of my 3 systems got tabs after a couple of days, the third is still without. It has a non-compliant CPU which may be the reason.
