Hello friends, and happy New Year to you all.

On the system above, the on-board video stopped working. I bought a gigabyte GT710 card with 2MB. It works OK. Maybe not quite as well as the on board video.

I have an itch to rebuild this computer. I've built 2 or 3 systems into the Antec case that looks like Darth Vader, and been in and out of it countless times. Most of the plastic clips and clamps are now broken.

Should I replace the motherboard, spend the money on a faster video card, or what. I figure if the on-board video has stopped working, maybe something else will fail soon. And should I re-use the memory and CPU, or is there something newer and faster?

The performance of this PC has been adequate for my needs.

I'm thinking of using this inexpensive Antec case, because the configuration matches the location for my PC: Amazon.com

You're the only one that can say if you should. If you want more performance than go for it and depending on what you use the computer for should determine what you upgrade. Be aware that if you upgrade the motherboard that it either uses the same CPU and memory or if you go new/bleeding edge you will probably need a new CPU and memory as they are dependent on the motherboard.

Earthlink? Now there's a blast from the past.

Discrete GPUs are usually superior to the integrated GPU. But the GT710 is old (2014) and much weaker than the UHD 730 in the I5-12400.

Whether you could upgrade the GT710 depends on your PSU. The one advantage to the GT710 is that it requires no additional power connections; it gets all its power from the PCI-E slot.

I wonder if the onboard graphics are really dead? I don't know how common it is for the iGPU to die, while the rest of the CPU continues to work.

If one device on that board has failed then it can't be trusted not to go up in flames in the future.

The on-board video is IN the CPU, not ON the motherboard.
The connectors for the on-board video are attached to the motherboard, but the video chip (IGP), is IN the processor (CPU).
IGP stands for Integrated Graphics Processor.

So... IF the on-board video has died, you will need to replace the CPU.

But I somewhat agree with Ghot (post 14). If the iGPU is really dead, there may be an issue with the CPU, which is where it is located.

I'm not competent to suggest a troubleshooting method to identify your graphics issue.

I'm not competent to be sure where the problem is. I tried different cables (including different types of cables) and a different monitor. When I ran out of things I could figure out, I tried the GT710 card, chosen because it was cheap and available the next day from Amazon. When that worked it convinced me that the problem was on the motherboard. I didn't realize the graphics were actually done by the CPU.

I'm at the limits of my diagnostic capabilities. Switching CPUs or MBs is an expensive way to diagnose the problems.

A semi-random suggestion: switch back to the onboard graphics. (Remove the GT710.) Clear the CMOS.

There should be a setting in the Nvidia control panel, to choose between the IGP and the GT710.
There may also be one somewhere in Window's... Settings > Display > Graphics

I've never had a CPU with an IGP, so I'm not really up on where the IGP settings are.

But if you find those settings, and set them to IGP, and it works... then you don't need to replace anything.
It could be something as simple as that setting (where ever it is), got set to use a discreet vid card like your GT710, by an update or by accident.

It could also be a damaged graphics connector on the rear of the motherboard. That would mean you need a new mobo.

@bobkn has a good point. If both ports don't work than it's more than likely the CPU.
That board could be upgraded to a 14th gen CPU (with the latest BIOS installed).
Anything newer than that would require a new mobo, CPU, and RAM.
