Like all licensed software, I will be staying with my Macrium 8.x licenses until they no longer function properly or do not offer a feature that I deem is necessary to utilize.

When I was using the Macrium Free product, i would update to the newest versions as there was no cost to do so. After a number of years, I decided to purchase a pack of licenses for my machines because I felt that Macrium deserved money for their product as I relied on it. Even if Macrium would have offered a perpetual license for 10.x, it's highly unlikely I would have bought it unless they had a super cheap upgrade option or if 8.x no longer worked for whatever reason.

The simply existence of Macrium X, doesn't make me want to plunk down money to buy it.

If they offer a perpetual license like I did with 8 going from 7 , then I will make the jump but I will not pay a subscription for it.
Paying a subscription for anything other than security software is not worth it, all you're doing is making someone rich , think about it ...... lets take Macrium for instance who's user or subscription base is more than likely in the millions , take that $49.95 yearly subscription and multiply it by all those millions. It is a ton more than they need to make to cover overhead , salaries, insurance and all the other things that go along with running a business.
Lets face it , there are really no major updates that will occur to it after it's initial release , your updates will mainly consist of bug fixes just as they did with 8 and previous versions, so in my mind $49.95 a year is not worth it for bug fixes, not when you multiply it by their user base and to me that is just greed, I have no qualms with the rich or someone making a profit but to me that is just theft, it's not only Macrium , it's all these other software companies too cramming subscriptions down our throats.

Every software I own is either a lifetime or perpetual license , I don't pay subscriptions for any type of software, I will pay for the major updates but I will not pay a monthly or yearly subscription for anything. Even my Malwarebytes software is a lifetime license.

Yeah , yeah, I know it's their software and they have the right to charge what they want , but I also have the right to kick it down the road and go with something else , it's good software by not $49.95 a year good.

It will be about £50 per computer, per year.
Buy a v8 perpetual licence now at £57.99 and when Reflect X is released trade it in at no cost for a 3-year subscription. That works out about £19 per year, £15 per computer per year if you do the same for a 4-pack.

Macrium said:
If you purchased on or after July 1st, 2024, you have two options;
  • Continue using Reflect 8 for as long as you want. You will continue to have access to 12 months technical support from the date you bought the licenses.
  • Trade in (your existing license will be deactivated after your new license is activated) your one-time license (which has one year support from the date of purchase) and receive a 3-year Annual Plan at no extra cost. Macrium may make loyalty offers available at the end of your 3-year term....
Home users have 6 months from the launch of Reflect X to decide which option suits them best.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I am not going to convert a perpetual license to a three year license when I could use the perpetual that I have indefinitely. If I cannot convert my perpetual for the same in return , even if I have to pay for the upgrade , they can keep it.

I have had my perpetual v8 licences for 3 years since the launch. There will probably be a new Reflect in another 3 years. If so, and you would likely upgrade again, then having a 3 year licence would be no different in practice from having a perpetual licence.

I've tried major backup and imaging products including Acronis, Paragon, ShadowProtect, EaseUS and O&O nothing close comes to the reliability of Macrium Reflect. I hope Macrium wake up.

As a Macrium user for well over a decade now I am staying put with 8.1 till some day it refuses to function on some future version of Windows OR when and if Macrium realise the error of their decision and offer us home users with a 4 pack licence a perpetual upgrade. They reversed a similar move to a full subscription model around 2-3 years back and introduced an additional option for perpetual licences.

While you are waiting, do trial Hasleo.

Yes of course I'll have to try other solutions too. Cannot be tied down to only Macrium as good as it may be.

PS - This is a wakeup call, the 2nd actually, for us loyal Reflect users. I am not happy (a bit pi$$ed off actually) as I slept well because I knew my data was safely backed up and my boot drive imaged multiple times a day with a near 100% surety it could be restored when necessary.

They reversed a similar move to a full subscription model around 2-3 years back and introduced an additional option for perpetual licences.
This is not true - the perpetual licence was always on offer.

What they did do was not initially PROPOSE a 4 licence pack discount but later decided to offer a 25% discount (far less generous than the normal original discount of 50%).

This original proposal happened before the actual release of 8.1 but upon release the modified proposal was in place.

I’m staying with ver 8 unless they relent & offer a perpetual license for ver X. I may consider a subscription providing the cost is less than £20 per year.

Presuming that the members on this thread are skilled and have knowhow about backup software i have a question, is it confirmed that window is going to deprecate the " W7 backup and restore" in their next OS? I hope this is not considered an off topic.

Presuming that the members on this thread are skilled and have knowhow about backup software i have a question, is it confirmed that window is going to deprecate the " W7 backup and restore" in their next OS? I hope this is not considered an off topic.
We dont know if they will ever remove it from the consumer editions ( but not the server editions) . Probably depends how many people keep using it. I agree it works fine.
