Deprecation and removal are not the same thing. Deprecated mean all development has ceased. Removal may follow but 'when' is not certain. It is still there in the release preview of 24H2 despite having been deprecated seven years ago.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Microsoft broke Backup and Restore in the 32-bit version of Windows 10 for the entire life of version 1803. MS neither acknowledged or tried to fix it. It didn't work again until 1809 was released, by that time I had switched to using Reflect.

A Macrium user for almost 10 years here - I'm not voting. I'm sticking with V8. Reflect X is over four-times what I spent before - something I can not afford. NOT real happy with the Macrium brain trust :mad:

I used IFW for many, many years as my Macrium Reflect backup. Recently switched Macrium to the secondary and have HASLEO as my primary. When I cannot use REFLECT any more, IFW will take that secondary position once again.

It's certainly helpful to have a contemporary list plus reviews of Backup/Restore programmes at least somewhat equivalent to Macrium.

As I've purchased two copies of Macrium 8 (installed on separate PC's as the backbone of a 3 PC home network), I've received the recent email on Macrium 10 as has everyone else.

This email does indeed add useful information to our future planning. I quite enjoy the comment within the email stating that it contains critical information (ie. facts) and not "marketing information" (ie. euphemistic gobbledegook). Macrium management does indeed recognise our irritation with successive marketing blurbs as they unfolded, so I respect their admission.

As it stands now, Macrium 8 purchases are guaranteed for patches and security until October 2025, another 12 months. By that stage, Macrium will have a customer database on Macrium 10 sufficiently large to allow them a decision on retaining only an annual lease-only model, or offering outright purchase as well. Retail purchase costs would be included as part of the analysis.

The outcome may well be annual lease-only, but at least we have been offered a 12 month window while Macrium management collect data for a final decision. At this point, I think we have a reasonable outcome.

When if comes to Macrium Reflect VX, there is a wave of "Woe is me“ and I must look for an alternative to VX.

Think about this - supposing VX had not been developed, and we continued with V8, we would just carry on.

Updates to V8 are quite infrequent now and usually pretty obscure bug cases that just do not affect vast majority of users.

V8 is a mature product and very reliable as is V7 which many still use.

There is absolutely no reason to think V8 is going to explode and it will work for many years to come unless MS make a major change e.g. change from NTFS to a new file format, change VSS to a different shadow copier.

There was once a bug in the Insider version that caused V8 not to work but even then you could backup from a usb drive.

Just keep using it until the day it breaks. I am certain I will expire before V8 does.

Perhaps the biggest irony is that one of the major reasons why the VX takeup will be very low is because V8 is so reliable.

So STOP PANICKING. There is a sound alternative to VX - its called V8!

Macrium have offered a 12 months window of choice for version 8.1, excluding the obvious default for the customer of doing nothing till MS throws an update that breaks Macrium ... quite possible. Where is the "PANIC" in that ?

Experience. Maybe there are some Test around but I have never seen one.
Macrium Reflect is known as very very reliable.
Is this also valid for EaseUS Todo?
It's just what I think about.

I would use the tools that comes with windows, like XCOPY and ROBOCOPY for data backups. And the rest I simply just image using Windows built in tools, which can easily be restored into a state the system was in during initial setup (after all drivers and important software packages has been added), which will also cleanup any Windows garbage that accumulates by time and is a bit tricky to get rid of after the fact.

No need to pay for anything or use GUI tools that one minute work and the next it doesn't. 😄

As I recall that was v7, not v8, and was promptly patched to cope with the changes MS had made in the OS. That was long before it made it out of the Insider builds. The fix was even back-ported to v6 over a year after the official end of extended support for v6.

I know from personal experience that v7 will work in Win11. I've also seen reports from v6 Home licenced users that v6 still works under Win11.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

So what commands do you use to back up the system? And do they offer compression?

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Dev, Beta, and Canary builds as native boot vhdx.
