If Macrium Reflect X is too expensive, what will you switch to?

I rather object to people saying speed is not important - if that was true, everybody would drive much less powerful cars, using your (rather obfuscating) car analogy.

Sure, for many, Image backup speed may not be important.

For me it is - I do not have to justify to anybody why that is - it's my personal preference.

I never said speed wasn't important -- but like all these things it's cost vs what you actually want to achieve. For example automated Stock trading systems need the fastest speed possible at whatever the cost.

For individuals it's a choice - and nobody is asking you to justify your preferences -- the thread here was IF Macrium was becoming too expensive what would you use -- which implies at least a different solution.

Macrium V8 Free still works in a lot of cases too although later versions of Windows with bitlocker / encryption and other changes in the bootloader might render future working not guaranteed.

My backups are typically 40GB and take about four minutes using 8.1. I see no point in paying more to do backups in three minutes, so I agree with Jimbo45.
But I respect your opinion too.

My last backup was 317GB and took 3 minutes. I like Reflect X.

Yes, I used Reflect 8 and it was slower. I was also backing up to a slower drive. I'm currently backing up to a 4TB Samsung T9 SSD attached to a Thunderbolt 4 port.

Some of us have two cars. "My Other Car is a Porsche" as it says on the bumper sticker.

I have one machine with a very large system image. As a consequence imaging speed is by far the most important factor. That machine has my one Reflect X licence (a v8 licence traded in at no extra cost for a 3-year Reflect X plan). The rest can stay on v8 unless a change in Windows breaks it.

My backups happen at 2-3am. I don't care if they take 2 min. or 20 min. Full restores should be very rare events so if once in a while you need to do it and it takes a bit more time, also not a big deal. If you are restoring a lot, you have bigger problems to worry about. Reflect X being marginally faster than 8.1 does not justify the $$.

Not everyone is the same. I'm 100% mobile and always working from different places. I carry two 4TB Samsung T9 SSD drives in my backpack and attach them only when making my images. My 3 minute backups are very important to me. And my $49 USD annual subscription is no big deal. I spend more than that to fill my car's gas tank.

Yes, but how much time does MR X save you over MR 8.1? It seems to me that most people are'saving' only a few minutes in a task that can be run inthe background or when they are not using the computer. As someone once said, don't let the excellent be the enemy of the good. I like 'good enough'.

As for reliability, not sure Reflect X is there yet, there's some new stuff in there that needs a bit more time to mature. If reliability alone is the most important factor, I'd stay on 8.1 for now, it's been battle tested. Basing my comment on the changelog: Macrium Reflect X Patch Details

I would never rely on only one backup method in my backup strategy.

My data is the single most important thing to me. I can recreate anything but my data and my photos. My backup strategy uses 3 separate methods. Macrium Reflect, OneDrive, and File History. It is vital that one of my backup methods MUST always be offsite at all times. OneDrive is my real-time offsite method.

OneDrive backs up your files continuously. If your system is corrupted by malware, OneDrive will faithfully back it up regardless. Orbisvthat incorrect?

I do not think OneDrive will Back up your entire system or 3rd part apps.

Well, I finally took the dive. I have 2 x 4 pack of licenses. I just traded in one set for a lifetime of 50% off the subscription rate. I now have until the end of March to decide whether or not to trade in the remaining 4 licenses.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the behavior is after an upgrade? On my primary system I have a daily image backup that takes place as well as a daily file and folder backup. Will my next scheduled backup be in the new image format? Will it need to do a new full image backup using the new format first?

I guess that I will find out tomorrow morning when it attempts to perform the next scheduled backup.
