In File Explorer, is this icon how your C: drive shows up under This PC?

Is this how your C: drive icon looks like in File Explorer under This PC, I am referring to the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark.

That's a bitlocker icon.

No, perfectly normal for me.

But I think that is a symbol for encryption having been enabled and now disabled on the drive?

Correct.

The drive has either been encrypted by BitLocker or Device Encryption.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I rarely go look at the C: drive so just was curious what it meant.

Just tried the link provided by @Cliff S which as the instructions as follows:


To turn on Bitlocker, you may follow this steps:

1. Click Start, type File Explorer and press Enter.
2. Click on This PC located at the left-side pane of the window.
3. Then right-click on the C: Drive and select Turn on Bitlocker.
4. Choose which option you want to use to save your recovery key:

• Save to your Microsoft account - You need to be signed in to Windows with a Microsoft account to save your recovery key.
• Save to a file - You need to use an external drive to save the recovery file.
• Print the recovery key - You will be prompted to print the key for this option.

5. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Then click on Start Encrypting.


Note: The process will take a few minutes, wait until the process is done and the Bitlocker will be turned On.



To turn off Bitlocker, follow this steps:


1. Right-click on the Local Disk (C:), select Manage Bitlocker, click Turn off Bitlocker > Turn off Bitlocker.

2. Once you're done, check if the issue persists.

I ran into a problem, When I right clicked on the Local Disk (C:), there is no Manage Bitlocker option even when I choose the Show More options.

Just read this after googling, my Dell XPS 15 9570 notebook was on Modern Standby (S0) but with the registry hack, I enabled S3 mode and disabled Modern Standby mode so it seems Windows 11 will require bitlocker on all installations, I wonder if there will be issues with drive imaging or cloning with Macrium Reflect.

Upon further reading, it appears Bitlocker is not available for Windows 11 Home Edition which is what I am using.

Just saw this after reading the above article:

Dell seems to be using encryption on Home versions.

These actually run at 33C-39C which is way cooler than the Samsung 980Pro 2.5" 2TB SATA SSD's I am using in the other gaming notebook as those run at 60C or higher and way slower.

You'd think MS could come up with a different icon, than the "warning" icon.
They must have run out of money before payday. LOL

They could try a Closed Padlock for enabled, and an open one for disabled and an apple logo for ^$%$ up

My 3 Sabrent PCIe 4 NVMe SSDs run at 42°C Max. (C: at 41°C max, D: at 42°C Max, and E: at 38°C Max, all temps after computer has been on and in used for over 3 hours). My single SATA II SanDisk Ultra II 960 GB SSD runs at 29°C. In Fahrenheit, that's over 20° difference in temps.

While I know 40°C is only 108°F - that's still hot to me. Even fast 7200 rpm and 10K rpm Cheetah drives never felt that hot to me, even after hard use and checking temps.

Don't know about the 15k Cheetahs, never had the opportunity to check those.

Of course, positioning also makes a difference. The NVMe slots are laid out on the motherboard in between the PCIe slots, so at least one of those drives is fully covered by my Graphics Card. But the second one is not, and it is the hottest one lol....

Remember the 60C are a pair of 2.5" SATA drives in a ASUS G74X-3DE notebook so it's not the same as a desktop. I mean the 39C max for the NVMe in a notebook is like night and day difference. Desktops ofcourse will have better cooling. That's the same reason 2.5" Hard drives inside notebooks never lasts long because of the limited space. Back in I believe 1996 or 1997, I bought a new IBM ThinkPad 770Z notebook which was the latest and greatest with the largest newest 14.1GB IBM TravelStar 2.5" 7200RPM HDD available, it lasted exactly 3 weeks or less and the HDD went to several data recovery companies who has a 95% success rate, the end result was I am the unlucky 5% as nothing can be recovered. Fujitsu 5400RPM 2.5" drives were the most reliable. I also tried a pair of Seagate's 2.5" PATA 250GB HDD's that were 5400rpm I believe in 2008, it lasted until February 14, 2011 before one of the drives started having bad sectors. Ofcourse I run all the machines 24x7x365. Seagate Cheetah and Barracuda drives are not their own technology as they basically bought that product line and technology from CDC (Control Data Corporation)/Imprimis starting with SCSI drives and I have a story for that one too, there were times when I had new hard drives that I was testing just sitting on the floor and one time, a small piece of dust fell on the circuit board for a Seagate Barracuda 3.5" 7200rpm 2GB SCSI HDD in 1996 and ofcourse, that shorted the circuitboard immediately and I did manage to get a replacement from Seagate.

I was only comparing the NVMe temps you provided with my own, not any other drives.

And I've never had a drive hit 60C even in a laptop. Though, admittedly, I only have 1 laptop that has an M.2 drive (Have to check if it is actually NVMe or just M.2 SATA).
