Solved Installation of SSD in current configuration

My configuration is as defined in 'My Computer'

I'm planning to install an additional 500GB SSD (to provide faster boot) via an expansion slot adaptor.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

According the Inspiron 3670 specifications it supports an NVME M.2 SSD. I assume the OP is going to install an NVME M.2 SSD and clone the HDD to it. Alternatively, the OP could install a 2.5" SATA SSD and clone the HDD to it.

It is the OPs choice which type of SSD to use but the NVME M.2 one should be faster.

I'm not sure about that. "expansion slot adaptor". Could be PCI-E to M.2, but i don't know why the OP would do that if the M.2 slot is free.

I couldn't find this information in the Dell manuals that I've already downloaded.

I suppose I'll have to check by taking the case off and looking inside.

It's covered in the Service Manual.

As far as I have found, it has a single M.2 slot. Sometimes used with an Optane drive.

Both the BIOS and the add-on card need to support booting from an NVMe drive. The BIOS won't be a problem because, obviously, the computer already has NVMe capability.

You won't get the advertised speed of that drive as your computer will downgrade to gen3, which is what your computer takes.

Just that the drive isn't Gen5. It's Gen4.

And as "Scott" posted, your M.2 slot is Gen3. That's not a problem, except that you won't get Gen4 performance. Compatibility is not an issue. You wouldn't want to pay more for Gen4, but perhaps the pricing wouldn't be very different from Gen3.

I have successfully put an M2 NVMe drive in pcie16 slots with a board in order to get a bit more speed from a current drive when the M2 motherboard slot is slower than the drive. This pc I am using has a WDBlack SN850X in a B450 board using an Asus Hyper M.2 X16 card V2. Overkill, because the card is intended for holding 4 M2 drives in RAID. Because the WD drive has a heatsink, the cover with built in fan cannot be fitted, but that hardly matters to me. As I am using the built in graphics in the Ryzen 5700G, the x16 slot is available. The card claims 128Gbps connectivity. The speed has increased, by the way, was it worth it, probably not for me.

has anybody tested to see what happens with gen4 nvme in pcie3 port?

I dont know if the most important speeds would be higher than a gen3 nvme even when attached to pcie 3 port.

For most purposes the bottom two results are more important than then the top two rows.
