Here's an example of that unanswerable "juvenile logic" that pervades television (and real life too). It's from "Leave It to Beaver", the 1950's sitcom. Beaver (a little boy) has just returned home after spending two weeks away, visiting relatives.

Mother: "I hope you changed your socks every day."

Beaver: "No, I washed my feet instead."

Sure sure. But Beaver was a podophilia and a tad simple in the head. On top of that, actually had a Freudian obsession with his mother. If Freud ever observed Leave it to Beaver, his hypothesis would of amounted to his theory of psychosexual development, identifying that particular incident as an Oedipus / Electra Complex.

Yes, children back in those days did sort of "cling" to their mothers. But it wasn't necessarily an Oedipus/Electra thing. I think it's merely because that's how they were TAUGHT to behave. You can call it a "complex" or a "neurosis" or whatever you want, but it was externally induced, not internal. I was a child then myself (in fact, I'm only one year younger than Jerry "Beaver" Mathers), and I understood him and identified with him, because I was just like him. But only because that's how I was TAUGHT to be. Now I can look back and see that my behavior -- and his -- were artificially induced. Yes, things are different today; but it isn't because PEOPLE have changed, it's just because SOCIETY has changed.
