Is Defender + MalwareBytes better or worse than Defender alone?

jimbo45, just as in any specialized field we have to go back to keep up on the tools (programs) that are new & the old ones have been added to ! I go every 6 months back for refresher courses and learn how to use the new programs !!​

Windows Security Essentials on Win 7/8/8.1 was actually not half bad, at least not if you were using it in concert with other free tools, like, e.g., HijackThis, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, and of course MBAM also. But around the time when Invincea had taken over Sandboxie from Ronen Tzur, that's when things had definitely changed. I started to use my Firefox browser under the supervision of Sandboxie (nowadays continuing to be kept alive─and kicking─as Sandboxie Plus) back then, and quickly arrived at the conclusion that all this scanning for pestilence had become a pretty much useless consumption of background CPU cycles and SATA bandwidth. In this regard it is actually a little bit similar to defragging your HDD constantly, as Diskeeper (now DymaxIO) had been able to effectively eliminate the need for that too, i.e. during this same old era of our Win 7 we used to love so much that we all soon had to become members of SevenForums. But that was 13 years ago, and, there exists such a thing called evolution. So now I stick to using only Defender and Sandboxie Plus, with Primo Ramdisk to be able to speed up my sandbox performance when needed, as Sandboxie Plus lets me specify my own sandbox location─where the contents of the sandbox will be stored.

After a recent update, the driver of Primo Ramdisk is now compatible with Core Isolation and Memory Integrity. The free ImDisk also gives the ability to reduce the amount of RAM space, but between the Dynamic Memory Management option of Primo Ramdisk and it, there simply is no comparison. And the performance benchmark also speaks volumes. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to go about it. Rather, there's just a slow way and another way that is a smidge different...
