windows 11 home 64bit 24H2 (OS Build 26100.7992)
OS: Windows home 22h2

I have had my bacon saved by ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) with earlier versions of Windows. Is it still a reliable tool with Windows 11?

Thanks in advance for your helpful replies.

FreeBooter,

Thanks for the excellent video.

Maybe I should have been more explicit in my original post in this thread. In previous versions of Windows I have saved my registry to a USB drive. My mindset is that it is prudent to store registry safely off line in case of issues which may corrupt the operating system. To me there is no difference between registry backups and system images or file backups when it comes to saving backups to another device. Saving this valuable data off line is more secure than saving it locally.

caffeine

Thanks for the reply.
I read the supported OS's. That is why I posed the question. I last used ERUNT on Windows 10. I await other suggestions.

I tried it and it works.
I was able to do a restore on a VM.
There was a compatibility pop-up asking me if it worked OK, which I acknowledged.

Keep in mind that many modern apps now do not use the registry as they are mostly XML based.

Windows Apps (also known as UWP, Store, or Modern apps) create their own AppDataLocal registry files, outside of main Windows. So you're correct in that backing up Windows registry won't help you save those App preferences. Only a full backup will help you.

You have to love VMs. You can do all sorts of testing. If something goes awry, just a few mouse clicks can return you to a previously saved stable condition.

I wished Sandbox would fulfill that role, but at this point, it is a hassle to configure.

We have strayed a little from my original question. I have researched free third party registry backup and restore programs and found none which grabbed my eye. I avoid the Microsoft Store when possible. I prefer installing programs which I can download straight from the developer's website. This makes the entries for MS Apps moot.

With that said ... Are there any preferred third party apps outside of the previous posted discussions?

caffeine

I downloaded Tweaking.com but have not had a chance to review it. I plan to try it and compare just what it saves to what ERUNT saves but I still use ERUNT. It's been a month for this thread so have you come to any conclusions?

I have used ERUNT and the Tweaking.com Windows repair tool. But not for several years. I look forward to your Tweaking review and any ERUNT experiences. On Windows 11 I have been relying on Macrium 8.x Home edition.

Hmmm! Velly intelestink!

99.999% of users don't even know they have a registry, let alone ever think about backing it up.
And if they did, would they know how to do a Registry Restore? Doubtful.

For years, I've been making sure that my client's PC's all had the System Restore turned ON, and set to use a modicum of the free space on the HD.
I've been using a little script, in the Startup Folder, to ensure that a new Restore Point is created on every boot-up.
I've answered many a service call, where the fix was to do a System Restore.

At any point in time, I'll have at least 6 to 12 system restore points available for restore.
If one doesn't do the job, I'll use another.

Then those restore points are all backed up every time I do a Ghost backup.
So if I have to do a Ghost Restore, I get all my saved Restore Points back too.

So for me, whether or not to backup my registry is a mute subject.

Speaking of system restore, I did the minimal experiment that worked on every Windows OS that used restore points I tried it on until now. Make a folder on the desktop. Make a restore point. Delete the folder. Use the restore point. After "successful completion" I did not get my folder back. It looked like it only restored registry settings. Strange to say the least.

Make a folder on the desktop. Make a restore point. Delete the folder. Use the restore point.

The system restore program rstrui.exe should not affect your personal files. It only restores some items from the shadow copy. That is by design.

Did you look in the shadow copy for your folder ?

I have posted several times how to access shadow copies.

It is also possible to make an image of an existsing shadow copy which can then be applied to a different partition/disk.

I have done this succesfully several times when there wasn't any other kind of image available.

I am not trying to get the folder back. My point is, I think the registry stuff is much larger than in previous OS. Windows 7, Vista, XP stuff on the desktop was restored in every case. So I think I will stay with incremental backups and not bother with restore points. Seems like too much hassle.

Edit: Now that I think of it, this is the first laptop where using a restore point did anything at all. Windows 10 and 8 laptops Windows Update was broken. I could make restore points but not use them. So I started relying on imaging so as not to waste my time. Lots of booting 3 or 4 times only to be informed "the update was not installed." That gets old fast.

...sorry for the delayed wrap-up on this thread... I forgot about the follow up. I decided to use my old and trusted ERUNT. ERUNT is installed on a flash drive along with the registry backups.

Thanks to all who posted in this thread. I will mark it solved.

regards,
caffeine
