Is Google Drive better than Onedrive?

I'm confused. Are you saying that using google drive is worse than using onedrive?

No, I'm saying many users espouse the glory of Bitlocker and OneDrive, but that's what these 2 programs should do (work together) because they're both MS products

I use Bitlocker on individual drives and partitions, I do not have OneDrive installed on any of my systems

I use Google Drive as a method of sharing files between devices. It's built-in security is sufficient for my needs

However, if your files are THAT sensitive (as you say in your post #1), I'd be using neither. At that level of sensitivity, free cloud storage is NOT an option

Appreciate this. One snag that I encountered was that when I went into onedrive settings to stop onedrive from backing up my documents folders, i no longer see it on quick access in file manager. When i go to C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents to pin it again, nothing happens. what do you suggest?
I have never used OneDrive but i know several threads that touch the same.
So i can not help here. The two i know sit on the answer is @Bree and perhaps @TraderGary as he is a heavy user of OneDrive.
There is more in here that know a lot about OneDrive, but sadly my memory fails me in writing moment to tag more then Bree and Gary 😊 and if they dont know they defiantly know who do know. ;-)

If I may interject here, I would never use Bitlocker to encrypt super sensitive data like that.

Use something like VeraCrypt to do that, instead. You've used it before so you know what I'm talking about, but for others out there who wouldn't know.

And no, I don't think everybody who uses it is some kind of paranoid. It's for those who want something safe & secure above all else, away from prying eyes.

Temporarily locate your data you want to encrypt to your desktop. Start using VeraCrypt to encrypt it on your desktop. Then after that's done, start uploading your VeraCrypted data from your desktop to the cloud. That's how I would do it.

So me personally, if I was using the cloud, I would never encrypt anything while it was already in there. I would always do it locally before the upload.
I asked Brink that from others perspective :-) i will never ever touch Bitlocker, But that is another story for another thread.
You can find my solution in post #9 on page 1. link to my post on page 1.
So we are on the same page, just you missed my post. :-) (y)

OneDrive doesn't "backup" per se, it synchs between cloud and local storage

what do you suggest?
If it doesn't suit your needs, and/or you can't control it, don't use it

I'd better stop here, my anti-OneDrive I-feel-for-the-unsuspecting-user prejudices are becoming a bit too obvious ....

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Someone on reddit mentioned that 7zip encryption is easy to hack. What do you think?
You can use AES-256 encryption and it's quite secure. If you're using the ZipCrypto default, it's not.

I use the Personal Vault settings in OneDrive for anything sensitive. I don't like using things like Veracrypt containers becuase every time you change the container file, you have to re-upload the entire file again to OneDrive, it cannot just sync up the delta's. I don't have massive amounts of upload bandwidth yet (they are laying fiber in my neighborhood now), so I like to keep an eye on my usage.

I think i could do it with something cryptomater, but I haven't personally tried that tool

If you had been backing up your Documents to Onedrive, then stopped backing up, then the default location may still be set to Onedrive. You may need to check and move it if required.

Hi.. Yes, so I was able to get the Documents folder on quick access but it's still linked to Onedrive. I tried using info from the link you provided but when I right click properties on that folder, I dont see a location tab as required in the link. Can you help please?

Sorry, I've not seen one with a location tab missing. That's @Brink's tutorial, perhaps he has a suggestion.

Hello, :alien:

If you don't want your Documents folder backed up (synced) to OneDrive, then you can turn that off below.

You can type shell:Personal into the Run (Win+R) dialog and press Enter or click/tap on OK to open the Documents folder at its current location that should have a Locations tab.
