Solved Is it normal for Disk Management to take hours to shrink a partition?

I was always under the impression that Disk Management was not smart enough to shrink a partition unless it had a chuck of contiguous space at the end of the partition that it could in effect just chop off. I was under the impression that for anything more advanced than that a 3rd party tool would be needed.

However, I asked Disk Management to shrink an 8TB partition on a rotating media disk drive by 500GB and it looks like it may be doing it, but Disk Management has gone completely unresponsive. Task Manager shows that I am both reading and writing to that drive at a rate of about 25MB/s so there is clearly activity on that drive.

Yes, it is a USB disk in a 5 bay enclosure so that may slow it down, but it does not give me warm fuzzies, especially when Disk Management gives no status update. It just seems to hang unresponsive.

Anyone see this behavior and does it sound normal?

Is this some newer capability is Disk Management or yet another thing that I misunderstood?

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

I always felt that disk management takes a long time sometimes, but never that long.

I always use another tool like minitool or aomei partition manager.

I may need to look into that. I have not had a need for that because I always plan my portioning very carefully so I have not had a need to change it. This is a rare exception where I am moving five 8TB drives from one system to another and making a small reorg.

yeah I would. I just don't see the need to use disk management when other software out there is faster and much easier to use. The speed is the main thing for me.

Why make things harder on yourself. I have a pro copy of aomei and use it pretty often. While you can do a lot of stuff with command prompt diskpart or disk management, its just easier to use a gui thats not from windows 98 looking days.

Agreed. Again, it's just not something I typically do, but I guess that a tool like that is good to keep on hand "just in case".

yeah. I hear you. I think if you try either of them you will never go back to using disk management.

i would use a boot disk like aomei to partition it from outside of windows. when its not using any system files it'll be much faster

active@'s recovery program works good as well

I just use minitool partition wizard free - it shrinks partitions in a fraction of the time moving unmoveable files.

Are you sure there is not a physical hardware issue with drive? If there are some bad sectors, this can have a massive impact on shrinking times.

even system files? typically (at least with mnitool when i use it), if it needs to move a system part or in-use system files it tells me i must reboot it fo finish modifying volumes and it will do immediately following POST screen, then continue to boot

Not for C drive but any other drive. MTPW boots into a mini OS to do C drive but still fast.

Actually, I wonder if booting to a dual boot vhdx drive and then shrinking the host OS drive would work. However I guess pagefile would need to be in separate partition.

Are you sure there is not a physical hardware issue with drive? If there are some bad sectors, this can have a massive impact on shrinking times.

Funny you should ask that because that is the one thing that I am fairly certain of.

I have a program that scans every sector of every disk in that chassis once per month. Just prior to what I am doing now that disk received a clean bill of health.

EDIT: I should note that this program is paused for now while I do management so it is not contributing to any disk activity.

By my calculations, if it is really moving about 25MB/s then having to move 500GB would take roughly 5.5 hours. So, if need be I will allow it to run until tomorrow morning (Thursday) before I drop the hammer on it. I'm not too worried (yet) because I can loose any two of the five drives with no data loss. If I loose 3 then things go sideways.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

Disk Management does not move files. This has been a known fact for a long time. Or has it changed recently?

If Copilot is to believed, it can move files, with the exception of certain unmovable files. It is still running. Stepping away a few hours now so we will see what it does. But task manager shows that it is indeed reading and writing still at a very stable 25MB/s +/- about 2MB/s.

If you have space on another drive, it might be quicker to image backup data on another drive, then wipe partition, create smaller partition and restore data

That way the amount of reading and writing is much reduced

It doesnt do anything more than free versions from aomei etc. It does less. It certainly has a lot less functionality than diskgenius free.

(Their filerecovery program is apparently good)

Can't see an inbuilt boot media creator, probably quite easy to diy one. It can create images, I havent spotted any fancy options such as exclusions.

just made a tiny test image of esp. It has .dim extension . Interesting thing is 7-zip can open it.

It doesnt seem to use any kind of snapshot. Unless it did something the eluded me, it is not ideal for imaging a live system.

It is a different format from their diskimage program
