I have just started using Win11 on one of my PC's at work. The specs of which are in my specs profile.

I do have one of my staff running it on his PC. That PC is connected to our domain. He does development work using MS VS 2019. His PC also has Office 365 and a LOT of other software. He has been running it for about a week now and has no complaints.

I have no complaints using it on this PC (which is not connected to our domain). I did not like the Start menu and Taskbar and have purchased and installed Start11. I like it for the most part. I also used the ExplorerPatcher so that I could get back my Quick Launch toolbar.

That all being said, do you all think Win11 is ready for business? Should I wait a couple of years (like I did for Win10)?

Seems OK so far but I wouldn't run a whole slew of business computers on it until at least Ms releases a proper official Retail / business version. Don't forget that some 3rd party software that businesses use might also not work on it either,

Nothing wrong in one or two testing in an organisation - but deploying out to a load of other users isn't the best strategy at this time.

Is this computer the Dell 9020? If so it is not officially compatiable with that computer.

I would not use Win 11 on hardware that is not officially compatible with Win 11 on any computer used in or for business.

What exactly do you mean by 'a proper official retail/business version of W11' ?

Edit: It's an honest question, I just want to understand better.

I agree. When a business depends on its computers, that's a risk I wouldn't take. At this point, we don't know what MS has up their sleeve regarding incompatible hardware and Win11. Maybe nothing. I just wouldn't take a chance when it comes to tools that run my business. I happen to have a second PC that is a 9020 with same specs as yours. Windows 10 is good for over 3 more years so it will stay on 10. By then it will be almost 12 years old if it lasts that long. It will have lived a good life and served me well when I have to retire it.

Well, so far I've upgraded to Windows 11 (fresh Window 10 install to Windows 11 update), and sometimes my Corsair k100 rgb optical keyboard needs a physical replug when waking from sleep. It has been less than a week and the computer froze once. This is my milage so far so if I had a business, I wouldn't be under the impression it's OK to upgrade all my systems to this if it's not really necessary. As far as I'm concerned Windows 11 is in a "toying arround" stage.

Microsoft don't issue a new version of Windows when they think it is ready for business use. What they do is designate the currently issued version as ready for broad deployment. They did this for Windows 11 last month.

Microsoft said:
Current status as of May 17, 2022 (PT)

Windows 11 is designated for broad deployment.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Many businesses use a load of software which is by current digital standards really back a Geological age, equivalent to the jurassic era or even earlier and many are still struggling to get that stuff working on W10 never mind about W11. I've seen complex accounting systems that could be done better by an 11 year old with a simple spreadsheet !!!!

For Startups or businesses that use a load of cloud infrastructure - no problem but for a lot - while their application software should have been upgraded years ago (like I should have bet on Horse nr xxx at last Friday's Race meet at yyyy !!) for all sorts of reasons it wasn't done and currently businesses aren't looking to spend a load of dosh out on this - even though in actual fact it might be the best time to do it !!! since a load are actually awash with cash and don't seem to have much incentive for investing. However that's verging dangerously towards the political and it's the technical part that needs to be explained.

I see you are from the UK -- say "Hi" to "Lizzie" for me and hope she (and you and others from there) ) enjoy her special day today -- platinum jubilee. Nice to see some sense of cheer in these "nasty" times.

Cheers

Has Windows 11 been released out to the general public yet as an "Official" standard version or are people still having to use builds released from the Insider program. I'm not even sure if there's a "definitive" version of W10 either - although 21H1 seems to be the best candidate.

Makes me wonder about W11 levels of maturity and their uptake in the business community.

1. W11 RTM in October 2021, maybe comparable to the birth of a person, 0.0% uptake in biz

2. W11 designated for broad deployment in May 2022, maybe comparable to a person designated for entering the workforce, 0.01% uptake in biz

3. W11 third birthday in October 2024, 10% uptake in biz (y)

Well, considering that the major computer manufacturers like Dell are selling computers with Windows 11 pre-installed, and that people have been getting standard upgrades to Windows 11 via Windows update for months now, and that the standard Media Creation Tool for Windows 11 has been available for months, I would say that yes, Windows 11 has been released out to the general public.

If you really, really want to be sure Windows 11 is ready for business use, I would wait for the LTSC version of Windows 11 to be released:

We announced the next Windows LTSC would be built on Windows 10, version 21H2, and yes it will be a 5 year support lifecycle. We can expect that the next LTSC *after* Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will be built on Windows 11. And it will also keep the 5 year support. However, that’s expected in 3 years or so, so anything can happen in that timeframe. If you need to use LTSC for a longer period, we recommend moving to Windows 10 IoT LTSC

Thanks for all the feedback folks!

With the information overall, and a specific statement regarding Dell selling workstations with Windows 11, I will make a slow move. I would have anyway, but I just wanted to get a feel from this community.

Is this computer the Dell 9020? If so it is not officially compatiable with that computer.

I would not use Win 11 on hardware that is not officially compatible with Win 11 on any computer used in or for business.

Yes, I am using this 9020 running Windows 11. I did it as an upgrade as opposed to a fresh install. This computer is not a "business" computer in that I don't use it to run any business functions. Upgrading to Windows 11 was/is strictly experimental for this machine. This computer was on Windows 10 21H2 and the upgrade went smoothly. So far, there hasn't been any glitches.

This. We do have downgrade rights when we purchase computers with Windows 11. We wipe any Dell PC and put a fresh install of Windows 10 on them. We will probably keep doing that for a while. I appreciate your thoughts on this.

I like the pic of the 57 Chevy pickup. Is it your truck or just a pic?

I have two reason to suggest you wait. #1. Because it's for business use, I would only us it on computers that are 100% compatible with Windows 11. #2. I would wait until MS releases the next official build of Windows 11. By waiting you know that MS has had a chance to fix many of the bugs reported by users running the earlier builds of Win 11.
