Is Malicious Software Removal Tool better than malewarebytes in removing viruses?

I have malewarebytes installed. But does Malicious Software Removal Tool do as good of a job or even better than malewarebytes? Should I uninstall it?

Yes, you can remove it, but why? It's always good to have a second method of on-demand scanning if one suspects something malicious got into their system.

The MSRT differs from an antivirus product in three important ways:


  • The tool removes malicious software from an already-infected computer. Antivirus products block malicious software from running on a computer. It is significantly more desirable to block malicious software from running on a computer than to remove it after infection.
  • The tool removes only specific prevalent malicious software. Specific prevalent malicious software is a small subset of all the malicious software that exists today.
  • The tool focuses on the detection and removal of active malicious software. Active malicious software is malicious software that is currently running on the computer. The tool cannot remove malicious software that is not running. However, an antivirus product can perform this task.

If you want to disable WU from automatically downloading MSRT every month, run this command:

What's wrong with using Microsoft Defender all the time and malewarebytes on occasion? Malewarebytes is great but it does not need to run all the time. Leave it installed but don't have it run at startup so it wont take any resources.

Ive never gotten a real virus . . . only PUPS that are just adds that pop up in free software. And nothing has ever intercepted a true virus that I have seen in decades. Firefox also stops potential unsafe sites and files so that may have saved my bacon a few time. Practice safe internet and you are more than adequately protected.

Nothing wrong with a little redundancy in security and backup and restore software. Malware software has holes in it that other software makes up for. Read some of the comparisons of the top 5

It does hog some resources, but it's an AV and a firewall in one.

Bitdefender Total Security


It has 13 modules. I only use three of them.
The AV, the firewall and the Threat Defense.
That cuts down on the resources quite a bit.

I've been using Bitdefender since 2013

I have adwcleaner, Avira, bitdefender, BullGuard and MBSetup.
MBsetup runs the setup for the full Malwarebytes app
adwcleaner is a lightweight, portable tool for finding and removing adware, PUPs and browser hijackers, often finding things the main program misses (some say)

I've used others as well but I kept these install programs because I was happy with them.
I need to run them all again to see if they find anything.

There is no redundancy. As others have told you MSRT is a on demand tool that removes malicious code from an already infected computer. AV tools are real time protection.
You say you have MWB installed but is it the free version? If so it is also an on-demand tool. However, MWB Premium and Windows defender are both real-time tools and both run very well alongside each other. That is redundacy. Most of us who have purchased MWB premium run them that way.

I gave you an option, because you questioned whether MSRT was needed or not.

MSRT is useful if you believe Defender stopped working from an unknown problem, so you need a 2nd opinion for scanning local files.

Generally, most folk run Windows defender and Malwarebytes (free or paid) for a 2nd opinion.

No reason I can see. I run Malwarebytes, but an occasional second opinion doesn't hurt. I can't imagine enough overhead for me to work up a sweat.
