Solved Is the end for Firefox (pity as I still like it sill has menus) - Now SOLVED

Hi folks
Is this the final nail in the coffin for Firefox (the only browser left still to have menus which I know a lot still like)

Its problem is that it just can't play a lot of live videos from web sites -- e.g from the BBC iPlayer for instance. You get a message - this content can't be played and there doesn't (at least I can't find one) a fix for this.

Google-chrome and Edge both play (straight out of the box) - even the Linux version of Mocrosoft edge (yes they do have a version) but I'd still rather use firefox.

So Firefox it looks like 2024 R.I.P unfortunately. Playing video's without hassle from web sites is absolutely essential these days if the browser is to be worth installing.

This used to be blamed on the Microsoft media feature pack not being installed by default anymore in Windows 10. I wonder if it’s the same for Eleven?
Used to be Settings > Apps > Apps and features > Optional features > Add a feature

I hope not, It is The only Browser I have used in Windows since it first came out. Rubbish? I think not!

Mea Culpa

It's actually working

I had excluded it from the VPN tunnelling list -- i.e where when using a VPN you can exclude specific applications from being under control of VPN -- i.e like local disks on your home network.

Ouside the UK you need a VPN to access some BBC iPlayer programs and live sport -- been watching (or trying to) the World chamoinship snooker.

Problem solved

I'll change title to add solved and mark also as solved.

The BBC have announced that from a date soon (can't remember exact date), iPlayer will no longer work in browsers.

You and Firefox! Firefox = great browser now rubbished by too many "Extras" etc - no video playable now

I watch many Movies using Firefox without any problems at all. I also can stream using it.

What they said was that they were only going to provide enhanced functionality in their app.
Browser functionality will remain as it is now.

My error, bad translation.
I think you can no longer download using Iplayer in a browser.

Yes.
- In a browser, all you can do is stream.
- The iPlayer app can download programmes [the app only runs in Android, Apple & Amazon Fire].

for downloading (without expiration problems) BBC iPlayer programs use the program get_iplayer

from command line use get_iplayer --pid=<the 8 digit nr> and optionally --subtitles

you can also download whole series in one go (get_iplayer --pid=<series_id> -- pid-recursive


current release is 3.35

After saving the programs you can stream or whatever from computer / device you saved on to remote TV with say KODI / VLC etc on the remote TV. An Amazon firestick with KODI or VLC side loaded works brilliantly -- even to "Non Smart TV's" so long as they have a USB input facility. I've 3 of these sticks for doing this stuff to our TV's in the house.

Also runs on Linux (most distros) and you can get latest on git)hub too if you need to install manually on non Windows systems -- in this case make sure utilities AtomicParsley and ffmpeg are installed -- with the windows version - all those are included automatically.

If outside UK use a VPN -- works 100% from Iceland,Belgium, France, Holland and Germany (most countries where I usually work from) -- watching Snooker on iPlayer from sheffield U.K. Using NordVPN.

e.g

for blue lights

logon to the standard BBC iplayer -- note the pid and then from command line (Windows or Linux) as normal user (no admin / root privileges required)

For Music / BBC radio logon to the Sounds app -- then same command --use the pid from the sounds app. (M4A format download)

get_iplayer -- pid=m001xwxx --subtitles --pid-recursive

to get the pid : it's either in episodes=xxxxxxxx or the seriesid=xxxxxxxx

e.g Blue Lights




Files are downloaded in M4A format (Audio) e.g from BBC sounds and and MP4 (video)
