I was wondering if there is an alternative can do the job like chkdsk ? for example can Hard Disk Sentinel do this ?

Chkdsk only scans for bad sectors and 'replaces' them with spare sectors, any 'recovered' file fragments are saved as mostly unusable files.

Hard Disk Sentinel can run deep scans to mark failing/failed sectors (Information tab > Short Self-test or Extended Self-test. If you have it already, use it - their site has a tonne of info - or, fire off an email to the dev with your query.

Over the years, there have been several very Expert programs written to Verify/Recover a HD.
Those all involve magnetic media, NOT SSD's.
Years ago, I spent $99 for "Spinrite 6" which was probably the best software ever written for an HD. (GRC.com)
But with today's SSD's, it's totally redundant.
With SSD's so quickly taking over the data storage market, even talking about the old Magnetic Hard Drives is a waste of time.

Also, most of your Disk Manager programs will have a routine to "Check" your hard disk. (still talking about magnetic media, only)

And it can run overnight while sleeping.

A long format is also a good tool to use. But obviously not for an active drive.

b) Backup imaging (free or pay) with external drive and / or cloud storage
