Solved Issue with HEIC Photo colors in Windows 11

Hello,
Many of my photos taken with my smartphone (Xiaomi 15) in HEIC format do not display colors correctly in Windows 11 (25H2). Both Windows Explorer (HEIF Image Extension 1.2.28 is already installed) and some software such as: FastStone Image Viewer 8.3, IrFanView 4.73 show incorrect colors - the images appear almost entirely red. There is no problem when I view them on my phone.

I have attached a example photo to this post. Do my photos have a problem, or does the software not yet support this type of image?

The problem Windows (and other devices) may have with HEIC images from an Apple device is due to the colour profile used by the image, apparently. You may be able to do something like this with your smartphone.

  1. Open the image in iPhoto.
  2. At the top of your screen go to "FILE"> "EXPORT".
  3. In the export window first change the COLOR PROFILE to AdobeRGB(1998). This is generally the most accepted color profile for all devices.
  4. Then if you want to change the file format, choose which file format you want.
  5. Then hit the "EXPORT" button at the bottom of the window.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

But why then could I view the same image on my Windows 11 system without problems?
I did not change the image at all, just viewed it in both apps as it came in the zip.

The color profile for almost every PC desktop or laptop monitor is the sRGB, ADOBE RGB has to be used on Wide Gamut monitors for photo processing and then saved with sRGB profile for standard use or sharing or web.

Strange . . . I just installed Irfanview 4.73 and it's all red.
Irfanview has been around a LONG TIME but I never tried it till now. I'm still using Polyview that's as old or older than Irfanview but it does not display but a small thumbnail of an HEIC but it is good color and Polyview is the only image app I have that shows the correct colors in Win-11. I'll install all the plugins and see what happens

    The only thing it lack is USB-3.2 on the front face but it has 3.0 on the back

Maybe you are. Those of us who have downloaded the attached .zip file have found it contains just the one quite ordinary .HEIC file.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
I did download it and looked at the EXIF. Just because it displays the metadata and a messed up image doesn't mean it doesn't contain malware. There are plenty of articles about malware embedded in images or EXIF data sections of images.

In any case, I am probably just being paranoid so apologize in that case to the OP.

EDIT:

I see red on the downloaded image but a HEIF image from my iphone appears normal. So it must be something in the format from that phone or a color profile issue. The image has no embedded color profile. With jpg files, windows and applications interpret that as a sRGB color profile. With HEIF?

I'm not a big photography buff so fighting obstacles trying to deal with proprietary heic photos on a windows computer is not worth it to me. Proprietary stuff can exhibit issues in a number of ways. Now I take my iphone photos as jpeg, never have ANY problems and go on with my life..

I agree it is not a very portable format, however HEIC is not proprietary, it is a standard format. Just not very well adopted.

The photos were taken with Xiaomi 15 (Android 16, HyperOS 3.0.3), not from Apple device.

I fiddle-faddled for days before I figured out the solution to make things so easy. I'm all about easy. Hours of my life wasted.

Yeah.iphone IOS makes it easy to share any format as a compatible format. It converts to jpeg before sending it. I like that as I shoot in RAW format on my iphone. Easy peasy. (y)

I don't have Irfanview installed. FastStone 8.3, yes.

I get a red image in FastStone, MS Photos, MS Paint, and the latest Photoshop.

I have the K-Lite "full" codec pack installed, plus some other stuff.

I can't explain the inconsistency.

No problem viewing those HEIC photo on my phone (Xiaomi 15) or on my friend’s phone (Samsung Galaxy 20 FE).
I’ve realized that this issue affects to all the photos taken during a certain period, the photos taken before and after that time display normally on Win, also I remember that this period matches the time right before and after I updated my phone’s firmware.
