UPDATE 10/15: Windows 11 Insider Preview Beta and Release Preview Build 22000.282 - Oct. 15

UPDATE 9/23: We are making Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.194 available as an optional update for any Windows Insider on an eligible PC in the Release Preview Channel. We have also made the ISOs available for Build 22000.194 to download here.

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.194 offered as an optional update in Release Preview.

Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.194 offered as an optional update in Release Preview.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.194 to the Beta Channel and commercial PCs in the Release Preview Channel.

App updates

We are beginning to rollout updates for several apps that come included as part of Windows 11 to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. Today’s rollout includes the following app updates: Snipping Tool, Calculator, and Clock with Focus Sessions! Check for updates in the Store and try these apps out and let us know what you think!

Fixes

  • Addressed an issue where if you enable then disable a contrast theme, it would lead to artifacts in title bars, in some cases making the minimize/maximize/close buttons hard to see and use.
  • Fixed a crash with certain connected devices that could result in not being able to use Bluetooth.
  • Mitigated an issue that was resulting in subtitles not appearing when expected in certain apps, particularly Japanese language subtitles.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing certain PCs to bugcheck during modern standby.
  • Mitigated an issue when typing with certain 3rd party IMEs into the search box in Settings that could result in the candidate window being rendered elsewhere on-screen (not attached to the search box) and/or characters inserted into the search box not displaying.
  • We fixed an issue that causes PowerShell to create an infinite number of child directories. This issue occurs when you use the PowerShell Move-Item command to move a directory to one of its children. As a result, the volume fills up and the system stops responding.
  • This build includes a change that aligns the enforcement of the Windows 11 system requirements on Virtual Machines (VMs) to be the same as it is for physical PCs. Previously created VMs running Insider Preview builds may not update to the latest preview builds. In Hyper-V, VMs need to be created as a Generation 2 VM. For more details on the Windows 11 system requirements – see this blog post here.

Known issues

[General]
  • We’re investigating reports from Insiders in the Beta Channel where after upgrading to Windows 11, they are not seeing the new Taskbar and the Start menu doesn’t work. To workaround this if you are impacted, please try going to Windows Update > Update history, uninstalling the latest cumulative update for Windows, and the reinstall it by checking for updates.
  • We’re working on a fix for an issue that is causing some Surface Pro X’s to bugcheck with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
[Start]
  • In some cases, you might be unable to enter text when using Search from Start or the Taskbar. If you experience the issue, press WIN + R on the keyboard to launch the Run dialog box, then close it.
  • System and Windows Terminal is missing when right-clicking on the Start button (WIN + X).
[Taskbar]
  • The Taskbar will sometimes flicker when switching input methods.
[Search]
  • After clicking the Search icon on the Taskbar, the Search panel may not open. If this occurs, restart the “Windows Explorer” process, and open the search panel again.
  • Search panel might appear as black and not display any content below the search box.
[Widgets]
  • The widgets board may appear empty. To work around the issue, you can sign out and then sign back in again.
  • Widgets may be displayed in the wrong size on external monitors. If you encounter this, you can launch the widgets via touch or WIN + W shortcut on your actual PC display first and then launch on your secondary monitors.
[Microsoft Store]
  • We continue to work to improve search relevance in the Store.
[Windows Sandbox]
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the language input switcher does not launch after clicking the switcher icon on the Taskbar. As a workaround, users can switch their input language via any of the following hardware keyboard shortcuts: Alt + Shift, Ctrl + Shift, or Win + Space (the third option is available only if Sandbox is full-screened).
  • Within Windows Sandbox, the IME context menu does not launch after clicking the IME icon in the Taskbar. As workarounds, users can access the functionalities of the IME context menu with either of following methods:
    • Accessing the IME settings via Settings > Time & language > Language & region > (e.g., Japanese) three dots > Language options > (e.g., Microsoft IME) three dots > Keyboard options.
      • Optionally, you may also enable the IME toolbar, an alternative UI, to quickly invoke specific IME functions. Continuing from above, navigate to Keyboard options > Appearance > Use IME toolbar.
    • Using the unique set of hardware keyboard shortcuts associated with each IME-supported language. (See: Japanese IME Shortcuts, Traditional Chinese IME Shortcuts).

Is anyone without TPM install this build? I find on internet info, that's the first build with TPM request. So I want to know how much chance to install Win11 in October :D
Here is no TPM (even no such option in BIOS), boot is from MBR (secure boot is obviously not available), new taskbar is replaced with "classic" 10-like, but: in Windows security the setting Memory integrity is on (not everyone can keep it on).
Last Beta build works well here, like all before.

This update was waiting for me to reboot Insider Beta system (.186) to install.
Rebooted and took 2mins to install on 7th Gen Intel 'unsupported processor' system.
All other hardware compatibility criteria are met. eg TPM 2.0 & Secure Boot etc.
Looks ok so far - will report if I notice any issues.

All good here. Now have fully compatible Dell Optiplex 3060. The Settings Insider entry still says this PC fails the sniff test so wondering how one gets that changed. Hoping MS will have another look before clobbering me.

Nice to see that they still have not fixed the ability to lock File Explorer at will. I have a feeling Win 11 will ship with that bug.
That's because Windows Explorer as in Explorer.exe is still at 22000.120

Just for the record, I have no idea how long the download took as it said the system will restart except because I have the system under a heavy load on my notebook, the screen went black with the backlight still on. As I could not see anything anymore, I had to hold the power button down for the 10 seconds so it would force power off and then turned the machine on again and it did the installation.

I see they stopped the option to use a VM to bypass the minimum requirements to install Windows 11.
Any info -- and which VM software does install fail on

I'm currently running the 22458 build on a VM -- so I'll try installing this one using the ISO from UUPDUMP.

Here's the VM running the 22458 build without any issues (other than some weird things sometimes in File explorer when browsing Networks)

Screenshot_20210917_083500.png

I'm about to create a VM and see if the 194 build will install -- this can't be done via WU update from the 22458 build so iso from UUPDUMP and create a new VM -- will post what happens.

Cheers

I looked at the link. It wasn't clear to me whether VMs were to be excluded or whether they simply had to be configured to emulate the device security requirements. (I don't do VMs.)

Hi folks
Install on a VM seems OK on this release too --so far 22000.194

The whole point about HYPERVISOR VM's (KVM / HYPER-V / ESXI etc) is that the OS is "isolated" from the HOST so the "Virtual Hardware" can appear to the HOST as whatever the HYPERVISOR wants to "send". Ideally a VM shouldn't even know its running as a VM !!. One gets into problems when things like VBOX / VMWare WKS / player are used because they aren't true HYPERVISORS, they run under the Windows user (or Linux user) account and there's a load of "paravirtualisation" which is good for being able to copy and move VM's between machines etc but for this type of process where you can also pass a lot of REAL hardware thru as well where appropriate those VM products aren't really suitable for messing around like this. !!!

same "Limited Hardware" as before a few posts back when running rs_pre-release 22458

1) initial setup finished -- 4 mins

Screenshot_20210917_092842.png

2) Now need to do a few updates e.g video driver instead of basic one Ms also downloading updates

Screenshot_20210917_094719.png

After that's all done will add language and my apps (office etc) -- No probs so far with VM's !!!!

Cheers
jimbo

Hi folks
For those running VM's -- both the 194 and the 22458 builds run perfectly as VM's -- even on my old MBR 2014 BIOS test system -- using "emulated TPM" etc - poor old machine just about had it running these two VM's concurrently !!! -- poor little Celeron CPU wasn't designed for that -- but for people rushing out to get hardware for W11 -- don't rush out just yet if you can learn to do VM's --there some mega powerful i5's and i7's out there which would easily run this stuff but on real hardware might fail the install test. Need to update drivers / themes etc on the 194 build but it does install as a VM quite easily. I'll copy the builds to a much more powerful practical machine but all I was attempting to show here that as a POC (proof of concept) these builds can still be made to work on "impossibly old hardware".

Windows 11 22000.194 (Home & Pro) also working fine under VirtualBox (after Windows update) with no ominous warnings yet. This is on a 2013 MacBook Pro which comes nowhere near satisfying Windows 11 hardware/firmware requirements, i.e. a Series 4 Intel i7 Processor and Apple doesn't do TPM and has already stated that Windows 11 is not compatible with Boot Camp (dual-booting) which is no longer being developed, as it is for Intel only hardware.

Great stuff -- mind you the i7 processor helps !!!!! -- remember also some VM's can do "Emulated TPM's" if TPM becomes a serious requirement.

There's too many people who will just rush out to get the "required hardware" just because they have seen something on "Twitter" or worse -- it's always worth checking stuff out properly before rushing out and spending serious money !!!!

Even if you want new hardware - I'd wait until say "Black Friday" or some of the end of the year sales when you probably could pick up things a lot cheaper and will have a much better idea of what the requirements actually are.

Mu gut feel is that by releasing W11 now with another 4 years or so of W10 -- W11 itself could be looking a bit long in the tooth by 2024. However who knows what Ms is really up to.

Cheers

MS is closing the door so If your device doesn't meet the minimum requirements chances are this build will not install.
Probably a good thing, I think that if you install on a machine that doesn't meet the minimum requirements and/or has been tweaked to get there it will lead to problems later on.
