Insider KB5018490 Windows 11 Insider Beta Build 22621.746 and 22623.746 - Oct. 13

  • Staff
UPDATE 10/20:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.746 and Build 22623.746 (KB5018490) to the Beta Channel.
  • Build 22623.746 = New features rolling out.
  • Build 22621.746 = New features off by default.

KB5018863 Enablement Package for Windows 11 22H2 build 22623.xxx

REMINDER: Insiders who were previously on Build 22622 will automatically get moved to Build 22623 via an enablement package. The enablement package artificially increments the build number for the update with new features getting rolled out and turned on to make it easier to differentiate from devices with the update with features off by default. This approach is being used for the Beta Channel only and is not indicative of any changes or plans for final feature rollouts.

Insiders who landed in the group with new features turned off by default (Build 22621.xxxx) can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out (Build 22623.xxx).

Changes and Improvements in Build 22623.746

[System Tray]

  • This build includes preliminary support to rearrange System Tray icons for Insiders who have the System Tray updates that began rolling out with Build 22623.730. Further improvements for this experience are coming soon. As a reminder, these System Tray updates are still rolling out and are not available to all Insiders just yet. If your PC does not have these changes, your System Tray experience will remain the same as before.

Fixes in Build 22623.746

[Tablet-optimized taskbar]

NOTE: These fixes will only show if tablet-optimized taskbar is enabled on your device. Tablet-optimized taskbar is still rolling out to Windows Insiders and not yet available for everyone.

  • Fixed an issue where the gesture to slide the Start menu open from the bottom of the screen using touch might stop following your finger.

[System Tray Updates]

NOTE: These fixes will only show if tablet-optimized taskbar with System Tray updates is enabled on your device. Tablet-optimized taskbar and System Tray is still rolling out to Windows Insiders and not yet available for everyone.
  • Fixed an issue for Insiders with “automatically hide the taskbar” enabled, where right-clicking app icons in the system tray was unexpectedly making the taskbar dismiss.

Fixes for BOTH Build 22621.746 & Build 22623.746

  • We enabled the ms-appinstaller Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) to work for the DesktopAppInstaller.
  • We fixed an issue that affects the Windows Search service. Indexing progress is slow when you use the service.

Known issues

[General]

  • We’re looking into reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders in recent Beta Channel builds.

[Tablet-optimized taskbar]

  • The taskbar sometimes flashes when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar takes longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version when switching between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • When using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings, the taskbar sometimes stays stuck in the expanded state, instead of dismissing to collapsed state.

[System Tray Updates]

  • [NEW] Dragging the system tray icons may cause explorer.exe to crash for some Insiders.

About the Beta Channel

The Beta Channel will be the place we preview experiences that are closer to what we will ship to our general customers. Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first. However, this does not mean every feature we try out in the Beta Channel will ship. We encourage Insiders to read this blog post that outlines the ways we’ll try things out with Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels.

Thanks for confirming. Still amazes me how MS continually break what is working
I've done quite a lot of experimenting with the Widgets in the last two weeks. There seems to be quite a lot of change along with some inconsistencies, this being one of them. A work in progress I think.

Still far too broken, To do does not work if you use your own email address, outlook calendar has issues. Sport widget shows sports I never selected and never the sports I want to show. The only widgets that are of any benefit to me are weather and traffic. Still odd that the weather widget opens a web page instead of the weather app in Windows, the same applies to the photo's widget, prefer to open the web version. Odd choice.

Yep! All them inconsistencies. I couldn't work out a structure to the filtering because the diversity of categories and sources overwhelmed it, at which stage Widgets stopped refreshing and displaying. Not a big deal as I am happy doing specific searches. However, I'd use Widgets if it worked well for me.

Click on the plus sign next to the user icon, top right. It will show the widgets you can open, there is a plus sign next to each one. Once selected it used to show a tick. Now it does not.

Mine is broken too.
Don't see that myself. There is a tick for each of my selected Widgets, such as Photos here....

1665911079404.png

...It may be difficult to see though, all selected Widgets are also greyed out. That's not inconsistent though, it just shows that you can't un-select them from here. For that you need to go to the Widget itself, after which it's no longer greyed out and appears with a + sign to add it back.

1665911894417.png 1665911933397.png

That's the same behaviour as the RTM release of 22H2, 22621.674. In fact, it was the same in the RTM 21H2, 22000.1098 as well.

When I check for updates in the Store it says I am fully up to date.

I appear to have version 521.20060.315.0, according to both the bottom right of Widget settings and looking in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. What version do you have?

This thread is for the Insider Beta Build 22621.746 and 22623.746, I have one laptop on the Insider Beta channel which is fully up to date on 22623.746. Version 521 is the latest version for the Beta channel.

Your 421 version is the same version I have for the General Availability channel build of 22H2 on another machine, though your 421.20070.715.0 update has not been offered to it. The Store says my 421.20070.685.0 is the current version. Maybe your Windows is on the Insider Release Preview channel?

Edit: just for completeness, the Dev Channel is on 521.20060.1235.0 now....

...and that one appears to be broken as you describe.

I am on the beta version, and this happens on both my machines with the beta installed. Odd that the release version of Web Experience was offered as an update. I manually downloaded the 521 version and installed that, and all is working as it used to. This could be a bug on Microsoft's side, as another user posted the same issues.

I'm on the beta version, I just added 3 widgets and they show the tick.
I checked on another machine, and there are no ticks. 🤷‍♂️
Do you have an FBH report for this bug?

I am on the beta version, and this happens on both my machines with the beta installed. Odd that the release version of Web Experience was offered as an update. I manually downloaded the 521 version and installed that, and all is working as it used to. This could be a bug on Microsoft's side, as another user posted the same issues.
I made an FBH report for the problem:

F.Y.I.
I did a restore of a backup that I made on 10/13/2022 of 22623.746 and that still had Version 421.20070.685.0 for the Web pack, the same as current public Build.
That works fine without the Widgets problem.
I'm resaving it since it did not offer the update from the store for now. I will check later if it offers the bad update to 421.20070.715.0 again.
I think my other machine did not have the problem because the Web Pack was already at version 521.20060.135.0 it was probably an update from previous old dev build before 22621 got switched to Beta. 😉

B.T.W.
Dev Build 25217.1010 has the same bug with Web Pack Version 521.20060.1235.0 🤣
They are consistent on propagating the bugs. 😵‍💫😵‍💫
Now instead of the tick a message pops up at the bottom for a few seconds and then disappears.
See screenshot below. 😝😝😵‍💫😵‍💫

Hello again,
As I suspected as I checked for updates on the MS Store, I got the update again and the same bug, which seems to be by design. 😜😜
Looks like now they are consistent with the bug on both Beta and Dev Builds.
Instead of the tick (v) they just pop up the message at the bottom for a couple of seconds, (see screen shot below) it disappears before you have the time to see it. 🤣🤣 "Photos pinned Undo X"
Looks really silly.
Why are they trying to reinvent the wheel? I hope they revert it back as it was before.
This just sucks. 🤐🤐
