Insider KB5020054 Windows 11 Insider Beta Build 22621.885 and 22623.885 - Nov. 7

  • Staff
UPDATE 11/10:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.885 and Build 22623.885 (KB5020054) to the Beta Channel.
  • Build 22623.885= New features rolling out.
  • Build 22621.885 = New features off by default.

KB5018863 Enablement Package for Windows 11 22H2 build 22623.xxx

REMINDER: Insiders who were previously on Build 22622 will automatically get moved to Build 22623 via an enablement package. The enablement package artificially increments the build number for the update with new features getting rolled out and turned on to make it easier to differentiate from devices with the update with features off by default. This approach is being used for the Beta Channel only and is not indicative of any changes or plans for final feature rollouts.

Insiders who landed in the group with new features turned off by default (Build 22621.xxxx) can check for updates and choose to install the update that will have features rolling out (Build 22623.xxx).

What’s new in Build 22623.885

Access Windows Studio Effects from Quick Settings

Windows Studio effects can now be accessed directly from Quick Settings on the taskbar, for devices that have a supported Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This makes it quick and easy to enable and configure camera effects (Background Blur, Eye Contact, and automatic framing) and audio effects (Voice Focus). You can still access these effects in the Settings pages if desired.

What’s new in Build 22621.885 & 22623.885

Expanded View in Widgets

Need more space in your widgets board? Can’t quite see everything at a glance? We’re trying out some changes that will allow you to expand the size of your widgets board.

Use the expand and collapse button in the top right corner of the board, next to the add widgets button, to expand or collapse the size of your widgets board.

The size of your board is remembered, so if you prefer your widgets board to always show you more content and leave it expanded then that’s how it will be the next time you open it.

Changes and Improvements in Build 22623.885

[System Tray]

  • This build includes support to rearrange icons in the hidden icons flyout in the system tray that began rolling out with Build 22623.746.

[Input]

  • We are introducing the new Tamil Anjal keyboard for the Tamil language. To add it, make sure Tamil (Singapore), Tamil (Malaysia), Tamil (Sri Lanka), or Tamil (India) is listed under Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region, and then click the “…” next to the language, select Language Options, and add Tamil Anjal (QWERTY) to the list of keyboards.
  • This build includes support for the use of clipboard history (WIN + V) on password fields.
  • Switched the touch keyboard icon option under Settings > Personalization > Taskbarfrom being a toggle to now being a dropdown where you can select Never, Always, or When no keyboard attached.

Fixes in Build 22623.885

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • Fixed a few explorer.exe crashes related to the recent taskbar and system tray work.
  • The pin/unpin visual will now display when dragging system tray icons to any position along the system tray, and not only when hovering over the show hidden icons button.
  • Fixed the issue where certain chat apps (that supported it) weren’t flashing with new messages or opening a preview on hover in the system tray.
  • The show hidden icons flyout in the system tray should now responsively resize with changes again to prevent empty spaces and columns.
  • Fixed an issue that could result in the show hidden icons flyout appearing disconnected from the taskbar in certain cases.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the volume icon in the system tray to incorrectly show as muted.
  • Fixed an issue where invoking the context menu for items in the system tray might not put the context menu in the foreground and it would get stuck behind the taskbar.

[File Explorer]

  • Did some work to help improve the performance of deleting files via File Explorer (when emptying the recycle bin or using Shift + Delete) in the case where there are a large number of files being deleted at once.

Fixes for BOTH Build 22621.885 & Build 22623.885

  • We fixed an issue that affects some modern applications. It stops them from opening.

Known issues

[General]

  • We’re looking into reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders in recent Beta Channel builds.

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • The taskbar sometimes flashes when transitioning between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • The taskbar takes longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version when switching between desktop posture and tablet posture.
  • When using the bottom right edge gesture to see Quick Settings, the taskbar sometimes stays stuck in the expanded state, instead of dismissing to collapsed state.

About the Beta Channel

The Beta Channel will be the place we preview experiences that are closer to what we will ship to our general customers. Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first. However, this does not mean every feature we try out in the Beta Channel will ship. We encourage Insiders to read this blog post that outlines the ways we’ll try things out with Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels.

1. I do not need patronising bs about energy usage.
2. More spaces for widgets is a waste of time as I never use the poxy things.
3. I have no idea what Windows Studio is even if I tripped over it.
4. The only other new feature (unless you are a Tamil) re. icons in hidden tasktray is really a fix, not a new feature.

Come on MS - when are you going to give us some blooming useful features e.g. better handling of partitions, ability to annotate snipping tool pictures with text and shapes rather than poxy freeform, ability to simultaneously two way sharing of two screens in MS Team etc.

I am getting seriously bored with the updates we are seeing, most of which are totally irrelevant to average user.

This Build broke the colour themes for Task Manager. If you choose a Custom theme, then Task Manager's background follows whatever you set as the Windows mode, not the default app mode as it should. This renders all the icons on the left side invisible, as they still follow the app mode correctly.

@Bree,
MS really messed this up.
As a workaround if you select both Windows and App modes the same, both light or both dark, then Task Manager colors behave normally.
They screwed up the Custom case where the 2 modes are different, one Dark and the other Light.
I think Task Manager should follow the color theme of the App like it always did, but instead they mixed up the behavior. One part follows the Windows mode, and the left uses the App mode color theme for the text making one part of the Task Manager screen unreadable. 🤣🤣🤣🤷‍♂️

I have received build 22623.885. I was unable to move hidden tray icons. I thought it's caused by my unsupported PC (CPU: Intel Core i3-7100U/GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620 31.0.101.2114).
I decided to change my insider settings from Beta to Dev, then updated to 25236.1010. I have updated all on Windows Update & Microsoft Store, then restarted PC. I'm able to move hidden tray icons. Everything works fine. Thank you so much.

Not a workaround I'm comfortable with, I've always found 'Windows mode: dark / app mode: light' to be the most pleasing on my eyes.

As none of my other issues seem fixed by this build (eg rearrange system tray icons) then my 2-in-1 convertible will sit this one out and stick with 22623.875 for now. I do have 22623.885 as a VM to play with, but this laptop I want to be useable while I'm out and about.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

First time here, recently built a new computer, decided to finally try win11 and join the insider preview. Wanted to share: KB5020054 broke my onboard graphics driver for my AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU on an ASRock PG Riptide B650E chipset motherboard. I only just got that monitor hooked up to the onboard graphics working again.

While I was doing normal things, my computer displays all blanked and came back on as though I had just installed a new display driver, except the monitor connected to the onboard graphics HDMI port in the motherboard was acting like it had no signal. I looked in windows update to see there was a new entry: KB5020054 installed today.

Symptoms:
1. Monitor connected to onboard graphics HDMI port wasn't displaying and windows wasn't detecting it. All monitors (4 others) connected to AMD Radeon 5700XT were displaying correctly.
2. AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics entry in Device Manager had a yellow triangle. AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT entry was showing properly.
3. Pulling the cable in the motherboard HDMI port and plugging it back in made no difference to the monitor, it was acting like it wasn't connected to anything at all.
4. Uninstalling the device in Device Manager and rebooting made no difference, except to display Microsoft Basic Display Adapter with a yellow triangle instead of the AMD entry as in step 2.
5. AMD Adrenalin software was not displaying current driver, even for my GPU (AMD Radeon 5700XT). Normally there's a section on the Home tab showing current driver. I had just installed the latest driver a few days ago.

Fix:
1. I uninstalled the device in Device Manager, reboot a few times, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter was showing yellow triangle.
2. I uninstalled the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
3. Downloaded the AMD Adrenalin installer from the website. It rolled me back to an April driver. 22.5.1 I believe.
4. I rebooted. Adrenalin showed I was on an old driver. I installed the latest driver. Monitor came back online before I had to reboot. Entry in Device manager is corrected.

GUI phase complete, now grinding through post-GUI installation phases. Jumped to 30%, then to 80&90%, a short while in the 90%, then done. Logging into desktop now ... took under 1 minute. Pretty fast, overall. So far, so good. =Ed=

I've always found 'Windows mode: dark / app mode: light' to be the most pleasing on my eyes.
That is the settings I normally use too. 😉
With this bug, if I need to use Task Manager, I just change the color mode to make T.M. readable and then I switch it back to my normal preference.
We'll see how long it will take for MS to fix this bug. 😎

Nothing fixed, but nothing broken. I'm unconcerned as my system is working enough to use for what I need to use it for. Dragging icons in the systray is just fluff IMO. But that is my opinion.

Task Manager screen is unreadable when selecting different color mode for Windows and App

Here is a new interesting search box addition for Task Manager in build 22623.885, as usual not rolled out to everyone, I hope they roll it out for all users. 😉

Installed ok. Not a lot of difference as far as I can tell.
My sleep settings stopped working; went from mostly reliable to "sleep... wakeup again", so I changed the Bios Sleep State from S4,S5 to S5 only, Fixed! Works very well now :giggle:

This replaced my Linux Notebook. I've used Windows since V2, tried various Linux distros but Windows continues to win for me.
