UPDATE 5/09:

 Microsoft Support:

April 25, 2023 - KB5025305 (OS Build 22621.1635) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11, version 22H2, see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

  • New! This update adds animations to a few icons on the Widgets taskbar button. These animations turn on when:
    • A new announcement appears on the Widgets taskbar button.
    • You hover over or click the Widgets taskbar button.
  • New! This update adds a new toggle control on the Settings > Windows Update page. When you turn it on, we will prioritize your device to get the latest non-security updates and enhancements when they are available for your device. For managed devices, the toggle is disabled by default. For more information, see Get Windows updates as soon as they're available for your device.

  • This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Edge IE mode. Pop-up windows open in the background instead of in the foreground.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Chinese input method. You cannot see all of the first suggested item.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. When you install this KB:
  • New! This update changes firewall settings. You can now configure application group rules.
  • This update affects the Islamic Republic of Iran. The update supports the government’s daylight saving time change order from 2022.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) process. It might stop responding. Because of this, the machine restarts. The error is 0xc0000005 (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION).

  • This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Edge IE mode. The Tab Window Manager stops responding.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects protected content. When you minimize a window that has protected content, the content displays when it should not. This occurs when you are using Taskbar Thumbnail Live Preview.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects mobile device management (MDM) customers. The issue stops you from printing. This occurs because of an exception.
  • This update changes the app icons for certain mobile providers.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects signed Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) policies. They are not applied to the Secure Kernel. This occurs when you enable Secure Boot.
  • This update addresses an issue that displays Task View in the wrong area. This occurs when you close a full screen game by pressing Win+Tab.
  • This update addresses an issue that occurs when you use a PIN to sign in to Windows Hello for Business. Signing in to Remote Desktop Services might fail. The error message is, "The request is not supported".
  • This update addresses an issue that affects Administrator Account Lockout policies. GPResult and Resultant Set of Policy did not report them.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Unified Write Filter (UWF). When you turn it off by using a call to Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), your device might stop responding.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the Resilient File System (ReFS). A stop error occurs that stops the OS from starting up correctly.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects MySQL commands. The commands fail on Windows Xenon containers.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects SMB Direct. Endpoints might not be available on systems that use multi-byte character sets.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects apps that use DirectX on older Intel graphics drivers. You might receive an error from apphelp.dll.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.1626

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.

Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
All usersAfter installing this update, some apps might have intermittent issues with speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting when using Chinese or Japanese languages. Affected apps might sometimes fail to recognize certain words or might be unable to receive any input from speech recognition or affected input types. This issue is more likely to occur when apps are using offline speech recognition.

Note for app developers This issue only affects speech recognition using Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS) in Windows.Media.SpeechRecognition. Other implementations of speech recognition are not affected.
To mitigate this issue, you will need to do the following once every time you restart your device:
  1. Close the app which is having issues with speech recognition or other affected input types.
  2. Open Task Manager by selecting the Start button and type "task manager" and select it.
  3. Select the "Processes" tab on the left and then select the "Name" column so that the list of processes is sorted by their names.
  4. Find ctfrmon.exe and select it.
  5. Select the "End Task" button.
  6. Confirm a new instance of ctfmon.exe is started automatically.
  7. You should now be able to open the affected app and use speech recognition and other input types.
We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

My Dell laptops have clean installs and do not have Support Assist installed. Mine get all their bios updates through Windows Update, never had a problem installing them that way. They're the same ones as Support Assist would provide, and are released through WU at about the same time.
Here's my History tab of my Support Assist ... It scans once a week - yesterday it scaned for Driver & Downloads. Thanks for the heads up !
I believe it expires in a year - then I just have WU left.... regards !

Oh Boy! Thanks, I must have gotton 3 - 4 Bios updates since September 2022? Most of the time they come from the SupportAssist. thanks Bree & FrancoDT [have a good day/nite.....]
Dell/Alienware have been pumping out a lot of BIOS updates of late. Not sure whats up with that but I'm guessing it's mostly security improvements.

I am getting a 'push notifications error' from Eset following this update. It's telling me to open a port in my firewall. However, I didn't update my no. 1 PC (desktop) and am getting no such error, so I'm fairly sure it's not my router firewall causing the problem, but windows update.

It's not the first time that there has been an issue with Eset following a windows release preview update - they usually get it sorted in a day or so.

I'll update if it's resolved.

It looks as if the problem predates the windows update, and it is just coincidence that I got it this morning. Intermittent outages on their server, apparently.

Well Bree - Nice of Dell to give us 2 ways to get the downloads. LOL I still think the SupportAssist expires in 1 year after purchase? ( glad you got the download) See if I can find my Firmware History? I got a few bugs with the download or with KB 5025305 download? It shut off my Malwarebytes Ransomware? - I fixed that. - My thanks to the forum members who helped me thru Windows 11. I had Windows 7 for just over 15 years. Cheers..... I'm still a newbee.

The main update works fine for me, however the optional .NET update stops Edge, Steam, Geforce Experiance.. basically any web based app from starting. Re installs of the apps don't seem to help.
Easiest solution for me (rather than hours of troubleshooting) was to restore the image I made just before the updates to get back to a fully working system.

No such problem here, I got the .Net update a couple of weeks ago on Insider Release Preview. Everything works fine.

2023-04 Cumulative Update Preview .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.81 KB5025182?
I decided to run a couple of tests, applying the KB5025305 Cumulative Update works fine on it's own, even turns on seconds in the clock as others have noted, all web based apps function normally.
As soon as the .NET update is installed Edge fails to start, so do Steam, GeForce Experiance and all other web based apps on my system.
Entering an URL in any other window (Explorer for example) does nothing, as if nothing had been entered. A restart & a hard power down/ on make no difference.
The MS Store does work though as do all apps requiring internet access, so it is just the web UI using apps that seem to break, if that makes sense.
I'm running an unmodified, up to date install of Win11 Pro, no 3rd party customisation apps.

Yes , same problem on my rig also ...........
Used a Macrium-backup , so still on 1555 again .
Installed Google Chrome as second browser , very irritating if you loose your browser...............
Wil try again next month when this update becomes final ! 😊

As you can see, Edge is working fine for me with both KB5025305 and the KB5025182 .NET Preview installed.

But I don't have anything else installed, such as Steam. It would seem likely that 3rd party add-ins for Edge that are the issue, not Edge itself. If so, then Edge should still open for you if you open it as an InPrivate windows.

I still think the SupportAssist expires in 1 year after purchase?
It doesn't expire. My laptop is well out of warranty, but SupportAssist still works. However, I have uninstalled it because it caused keyboard issues.
