Insider KB5058496 Windows 11 Insider Beta build 26120.3964 (24H2) - May 12

UPDATE 5/19:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3964 (KB5058496) to the Beta Channel for Windows Insiders on Windows 11, version 24H2.

REMINDER: Build 22635.5305 was the last update released to the Beta Channel based on Windows 11, version 23H2. All Insiders in the Beta Channel will be getting upgraded to Windows 11, version 24H2 soon. Until that happens, Insiders on Windows 11, version 23H2 in the Beta Channel can choose to upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2 and this build today if they want.

Changes in Beta Channel builds and updates are documented in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update*) and then new features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Beta Channel. For more information, see the Reminders section at the bottom of this blog post.

New Copilot+ PC experiences

Introducing the new agent in Settings

Last week, we announced a change to Settings designed to help solve one of the most common frustrations we heard: finding and changing settings on your PC. With this update to Settings, you will be able to simply describe what you need help with like, “how to control my PC by voice” or “my mouse pointer is too small” and the agent will recommend the right steps you can take to address the issue. An agent uses AI on your PC to understand your intent and with your permission, automate and execute tasks on your behalf. This experience is rolling out to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs with support for AMD- and Intel™-powered PCs coming soon. Please note that this experience works if your primary display language is set to English.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Settings > All other settings.

Intelligent text actions in Click to Do for AMD and Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs

We’re introducing more intelligent text actions to enhance your Click to Do experience even further on AMD and Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs. Use WIN key + mouse-click or WIN + Q to select a text block and then drag to select the text that you want. You’ll see options to Summarize, Create a bulleted list, or to help you Rewrite your text, so it sounds more causal, more formal, or more polished.

More intelligent text actions in Click to Do with options to Summarize, Create a bulleted list, or Rewrite.

Click to Do leverages the capabilities of Phi Silica, the on-device Small Language Model (SLM) that is built right into Windows. Results from our local model will show directly inline and if you’re happy with the rewrites you can copy them directly to your clipboard for use anywhere.

The intelligent text actions are available when your default language is set to English, at least 10 words are selected, and you’re signed in with either a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra account. You can learn more about using Click to Do here.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Click to Do.

Changes and Improvements gradually being rolled out to the Beta Channel with toggle on*

[Click to Do (Preview)]

  • For Windows Insiders using French or Spanish as their primary language on their PC, Click to Do will temporarily only provide Summarize, Create a bulleted list, Refine as intelligent text actions. Rewrite and its options, including Refine, will return in a future update.

[Dynamic Lighting]

  • Dynamic Lighting compatible devices can now be safely removed using the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” taskbar icon.

[Settings]

  • We’re making it easy to find answers to common questions about your PC and Windows 11 with a dedicated FAQs section on the Settings > System > About page, providing quick and helpful insights for using your PC all in one place. Whether you’re curious about system configuration, performance, or compatibility, this experience ensures you get the information you need for the frequently asked questions for those topics. We hope these FAQs will help you make informed decisions about your PC with ease.

FAQ section highlighted in a red box on the About settings page.

Fixes gradually being rolled out to the Beta Channel with toggle on*

[Start menu]

  • Fixed a few crashes impacting Start menu reliability for Insiders in recent flights.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed a deadlock which could occur when loading File Explorer Home, causing it to hang.
  • Fixed an issue where Shared by and Activity information was missing in the tooltip when hovering over recent documents in File Explorer Home.
  • Fixed an issue which could cause explorer.exe to crash when closing File Explorer.

[Voice Access]

  • Fixed an issue which was causing voice access crashes when using Spanish.

[Taskbar]

  • Fixed an issue where when using Tab and Shift + Tab to move keyboard focus around the taskbar, if you went backwards at least once you could get keyboard focus stuck on the taskbar frame, which would potentially lead screen readers to just say “pane”.
  • Fixed an issue which could cause the media controls in the preview windows for apps in the taskbar (that support it) to flicker.

[Windows Spotlight]

  • Fixed an issue where the Windows Spotlight flyout for “learn more about this picture” (when using it as your desktop background) might get stuck above other app windows.

[Live captions]

  • Fixed an issue causing live captions to crash in the previous build.

[Other]

  • Improved the colors used in MMC when items are selected, both generally, and when contrast modes are enabled.
  • Fixed an underlying issue which could make some apps like Word hang when trying to print.

Known issues

[General]

  • After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26120. This will not prevent you from getting future Beta Channel updates, which will resolve this issue.
  • We’re working on the fix for an issue where core Windows surfaces are not able to load in safe mode (File Explorer, Start menu, and others) after the previous flight.
  • [NEW] The option to reset your PC under Settings > System > Recovery will not work on this build.

[Xbox Controllers]

  • Some Insiders are experiencing an issue where using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth is causing their PC to bugcheck. Here is how to resolve the issue. Open Device Manager by searching for it via the search box on your taskbar. Once Device Manager is open, click on “View” and then “Devices by Driver”. Find the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” where the “XXX” will be a specific number on your PC. Right-click on that driver and click “Uninstall”.

[Recall (Preview)]

  • [REMINDER] You are always in control and can always choose to remove Recall anytime via “Turn Windows features on or off”. Removing Recall will delete entry points and binaries. Like any feature, Windows sometimes keeps temporary copies of binaries for serviceability. These Recall binaries are not executable and are eventually removed over time.
  • [REMINDER] Make sure you update Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can jump back into specific documents.

[Click to Do (Preview)]

  • [REMINDER] The intelligent text actions are now locally moderated to ensure the safety of prompts and responses and has replaced the cloud endpoint. Now that these intelligent text actions are fully local, they are also available in Click to Do in Recall.
  • [REMINDER] If any of your actions on image entities are no longer appearing, please ensure you have the latest updates for the Photos and Paint app from the Microsoft Store.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • [NEW] Image actions may not show up in Click to Do.
  • [NEW] Windows Insiders on AMD or Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs may experience long wait times on the first attempt to perform intelligent text actions in Click to Do after a new build or model update.

[Improved Windows Search]

  • [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

[Start menu]

  • We’re investigating reports that clicking your profile picture isn’t opening the Account Manager for some Insiders after the last flight.

[Task Manager]

  • After adding the new CPU Utility column, you may notice that System Idle Process always shows as 0.
  • The CPU graphs in the Performance page are still using the old CPU utility calculations.

[Narrator]

  • [NEW] We are investigating an issue where the richer image descriptions on your Copilot+ PC with Narrator do not work.

[Voice Access]

  • [NEW] We are investigating an issue where support for more descriptive and flexible language on Copilot+ PCs does not work as expected.

Entra ID support for AI features in Paint and Notepad

We are rolling out Entra ID support for AI features in Paint (version 11.2503.381.0 and higher) and Notepad (version 11.2503.16.0 and higher) to Windows Insiders on IT-managed PCs in the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels. This update enables commercial customers to access AI features that were previously limited to consumers. In Paint, Entra ID unlocks access to Cocreator, which generates images by combining a sketch and text prompt and Generative Fill, which adds new elements to selected areas of a canvas based on descriptive input. These tools help teams explore ideas visually and speed up creative workflows. In Notepad, Entra ID unlocks the ability to quickly summarize or rewrite text content.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel

  • Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel on Windows 11, version 24H2 will receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx).
  • Updates delivered to the Beta Channel are in a format that offers a preview of enhancements to servicing technology on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates | Windows IT Pro Blog.
  • Many features in the Beta Channel are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • For Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • Please note that some accessibility features may not work with features like Recall and Click to Do while in preview with Windows Insiders.
  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

Was not able to Windows Update to this build from 26120.3950 in three attempts.

1) Attempt 1 took forever to download and install for the Windows Update portion - failed install and undo changes after the reboot after 30% went to Diagnising and Automatic repairs.
2) Attempt 2 downloaded fast in windows Update but the install failed in Windows Update after it showed 10%
3) Attempt 3 downloaded in 10 minutes but installation part in Windows Update was slow and failed install and undo changes after the reboot after 30% went to Diagnising and Automatic repairs.

Maybe something is corrupt as DISM all were fine and sfc /scannow reports no problems since I had been having restarts that were within a few seconds or within a few hours while after the spinning circle on the POST screen finishes showing so it can happen there or before the login screen shows or after login.

My CMOS Battery appears to be dead which could be the cause so will need some time to find another device to use for the instructions to replace the battery as it requires taking apart almost the entire notebook since it's on the other side of the motherboard.

I could not find that either in any of my machines, till I searched for File Explorer. 😎🤷‍♂️
Dev Build 26200.5600 has it.
I still cannot find it on any other builds. The same settings for File explorer show on a different page. 🤷‍♂️

All Builds got this update Windows Advanced Settings, but the result is different. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

I'm on this thread's build.
I don't get it on this build 26120.3964 on one machine, i Just got it on a second machine with the same build.
Typical MS inconsistent behavior on updated features. 🤣🤬🤷‍♂️

One has this feature enabled 56005157 and the other does not.
Silly confusing CFR. 🤬🤷‍♂️

I had to do that and when I arrived on the file explorer settings page I also had to click on the button on the bottom to update the feature.
I got one machine with 26120.3964 with the update working, but it keeps showing update now regardless of how many times I click on the button.
The app Windows Advanced Settings is already at the latest level. 🤷‍♂️

Spent the past few days since the post I am posting and I managed to update to Build 26120.3964 Beta.
1) I tried the Windows Repair built into Beta Build 29120.3950 which as seen below basically did a Windows Update to Beta Build 29120.3964 Repair since apparently it will repair using the most recent build from Microsoft and not the current build on the system even if older that did the download and install 3 times which took nearly 3 hours each except when it rebooted, it just did a regular reboot without the standard updating and then reboot with the updating after booting but instead it just rebooted straight to the Windows 11 Lockscreen so gave up on that.
1747811571664.webp

2) I tried the Beta Build 26120.3964 UUPDump ISO I built earlier to do a in-place repair install upgrade except the system would randomly reboot when it was at like 95-99% in the blue screen setup program on three tries a few times and finally it did do the standard update procedure but rebooted at 7% updating after booting up and then undid the changes with the following screen:
1747799199538.webp

3) Tried the MSU update for KB5058496, thanks to @JGToy mentioning it in previous Beta Builds and ofcourse the system rebooted randomly before it finished the first few times and on the fourth time, it did complete and when it did reboot and then boot up, the update restarted at 7% and basically undid the changes.

4) I did some searching on Google and it mentions Microsoft has a tool called SetupDiag that is supposed to read logfiles and give a clue on why the update/install failed and this is what it shows:
1747799806285.webp

5) I figured it has something to do with the Recovery partition for the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or the WinRE.wim file except my WinRE works fine since I had seen it a few dozen times daily and I have even used it to get into Safe Mode but regardless, as I had two Recovery partitions known as 4 (1.2GB) and 5 (1.1GB) with 4 being active. I also used the file browser as a Trusted User from Right-Click Tools and sure enough, the WinRE.wim is almost 900megs in partition 4 with a April 30, 2025 timestamp which was when Beta Build 26120.3950 was installed but there was a temporary folder with a newly dated WinRE.wim that was 0 bytes in size. And ofcourse usually in-place repair installs are supposed to not have problems with WinRE since it will replace the WinRE files and also create a new recovery partition as needed.

6) So after some more researching on how to create and resize Windows Recovery Partitions using diskpart,
I decided to delete both Recovery partition(s) 4 and 5 so I can combine the total space of both just in case it was the Recovery Partition or the file being the problem, I did it using my own method(s) as follows:
6a) Delete partition 5 with Minitool Partition Wizard
6b) Use the reagentc /disable command to disable WinRE so it moves the WinRE.wim file from the recovery partition to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery which was successful.
6c) Use reagentc /info to make sure WinRE has been disabled.
6d) Delete partition 4 with Minitool Partition Wizard
6e) Create a new Primary NTFS partition using the 2.3GB of available space and also quick format and labeled it as "Windows RE tools" with Minitool Partition Wizard except I noticed it did not have anything to set
it as a recovery partition or even do the gpt attributes as seen in the instructions elsewhere.
6f) At this point, I had to use diskpart for the other stuff in the command prompt:
diskpart
once in diskpart:
list disk
select disk 0
list partition
select partition 4
set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac override
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
6g) Use reagentc /enable command which enabled WinRE by moving the WinRE.wim file from C:\Windows\System32\Recovery to the recovery partition which was successful.
6h) Use reagentc /info to make sure it shows WinRE is enabled and back at the Recovery partition.
6i) The WinRE.wim in the Recovery partition is dated April 30, 2025 as originally from Beta Build 26120.3950
7) From all the different researching, they all say the WinRE.wim file can be extracted from the Windows ISO itself but I remember reading that the WinRE.wim file is not that generic and when Windows does the installing process, the WinRE.wim file has drivers specifically for that system which was the reason I kept the original WinRE.wim file.
8) Decided to try the MSU update for KB5058496 and as expected, the system randomly rebooted before it finished so another three tries and it actually did the updating and rebooted and then did the update process and made it to 16% except the circle was spinning and my laptop screen goes to sleep as expected while my mouse worked normally but the 16% was there was 3 hours so I forced power off by holding the power button down for 10 seconds and this time, it went past the 16% and finished in 5 minutes and it got me to 26120.3964 successfully but I am still having the random rebooting problems anywhere from a few seconds to hours just like before as it could be the CMOS Battery or something with the OS itself that requires a repair install which I will do in a future Beta Build both before/and after I get the CMOS battery replaced.
9) I was also hoping to uninstall the 26120.3950 update but wheņI tried in WinRE which is a quality update, it said there is nothing I can uninstall.

I'm up to build 26120.4151 on 3 machines.
My Recovery partitions are 2.5GB on all 3 machines. I've never seen any update issues yet. 🤞
Like I said, the issue might not be Windows itself but physical issues like dead CMOS battery which I discovered when I was upgrading my memory from 32GB which is what the max Dell supports to 64GB when the machine would power on as soon as I connected the main battery and ofcourse the CMOS settings were gone on two ocassions when I tried swapping the two SoDIMMs and according to Dell Service Manual, only removing the CMOS battery will clear the CMOS settings. I could not get the rebooting to happen in various WinPE even with the stress testing memory/CPU tools. People have said that with 32GB or lower, the system will not even POST with memory with Cas Latency lower than 17 and others who have 64GB using 32GB x 2 modules are usually CL18 or slower. I'm the first one to have 32GBx2 CL16 or less memory actually posting successfully. I'll need to get a second system if I want to do a real memory test as I don't have the days for the system to be offline as I need the system for things daily so hopefully it's the CMOS battery as some people have had weird things happen with booting and stability even from posts some 9 years back. So even now, the Winre.wim is still less than 900MB and I could not find the exact error that the error code points to or atleast not sure what to be looking for using the link Microsoft provided so the easiest way would be to recreate the recovery partition with the WinRE.wim file first and if that allows the upgrade, it's not the file and the recovery partition. And ofcourse usually in-place repair installs are supposed to not have problems with WinRE since it will replace the WinRE files and also create a new recovery partition as needed.

All this time, I thought WinRE was actually something you can boot into but it's nothing more than blue screen thing where one can get into Safe Mode as a option but I did read some people deleted their recovery partition who did not do the reagentc /disable first and were unable to boot so my random boot issues fany point after the spinning circle at POST could be because of the WinRE.wim file itself. Now I wonder when Windows Update does the update to WinRE, does it patch the existing file or does it actually replace the file but hard to tell. I thought perhaps maybe my 26120.3950 update might be corrupt so tried in WinRE to uninstall 26120.3950 which should be a quality update but as I used WAU Manager, it's not shown in Windows Update History so there was nothing to uninstall. So for now, I will just update to builds when they are available either via Windows Update or using the MSU file from UUPDump as the later even if there is a new build, I still have the option available to try the build before moving to the next build to see if each build makes a difference as prior to 26120.3950, while the system did reboot, it only did it a few times with the first time being March 30, 2025 and I was able to be stable from the build right before 26120.3950 on April 12, 2025 all the way to April 30, 2025 without the reboot problem even though I did manually reboot every few days but April 30, 2025 was when 26120.3950 was updated via Windows Update and that's when it was really getting unstable at any point after the spinning circle on the POST screen.
