Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1371 to the Canary Channel. (KB 5073097)

What’s new in Build 28020.1371​

Fixes​

This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes that improve the overall experience for Insiders running this build on their PCs.

[Start menu]​

  • Fixed an issue where selecting something from inside a folder of pinned items in Start menu, could lead to the whole folder becoming invisible in Start menu.

[File Explorer]​

  • Fixed an issue causing File Explorer to show a white flash when navigating between pages for some Insiders after the previous flight.

[Input]​

  • Fixed an issue where the keyboard character repeat delay in Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Keyboard was backwards from how it was set in the backend.

[Other]​

  • Fixed an underlying issue that could lead to your PC freezing where attempting to run Windows Terminal elevated from a non-admin account.
  • Fixed an issue where the Share dialog might unexpectedly show an option to share to Shell Experience Host.

Known issues​

[General]​

  • [NEW] The desktop watermark is showing the wrong build number.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel​

  • These builds can be unstable and may be released with limited documentation. Join Windows Insider – Get early access to Windows 11 features & updates
  • The builds we release to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before showing up in the Canary Channel.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • To get off the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required. As a reminder – Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yes correct.
Same here.
Both Dark and both Light works correctly. 🤣🤣

Here is another weird case, Windows mode Light and app mode Dark. 😵‍💫
They use black text on dark, hardly visible.
They cannot handle correctly two different accent color modes, Windows mode Dark, app mode Light and Windows mode Light, app mode Dark.
While with both Light or both Dark it works as expected. 😂🤷‍♂️

That's what you get when you decided to use a Chrome Web Browser to run an Electron app for the Windows UI.

I have this same issue with mail sent from Google while I'm using dark theme. Text completely unreadable, and the colors don't even match the theme.

In this case they screwed up the search flyout and they end up using black text on Dark background and white text on Light background making the text unreadable.

I will wait for another build, not like I have much of a choice. SFC and RestoreHealth do not really help here.

Why can't 2 consecutive updates ever work 100% -- seems every other update to later build in the same "stream" has some defect or other.

The amount of countless times on Fedora Linux I've just typed the single command dnf upgrade and it just works perfectly. Just this morning I had 15GB worth of upgrades to apply -- re-booted to ensure new kernel (6-19-xx) was loaded and it's fine -- and I'm running Fedora 44 which is the NEXT version not the current F43 version and will be trying beta F45 as soon as it's available.

Windows is great for loads of things but why should updates etc just keep breaking the system. I expect some defects in what is essentially testing builds -- with the amount of users and really huge range of hardware Windows runs on it's not a problem - but the system should STILL operate and not also keep comming up with defects previously fixed -- or do Ms Windows employees not understand what regression testing is.

We are all MS beta testers. Sometimes official builds run worse and have more defects than insider builds. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

Linux Fedora F44 on a mini PC after that update -- all 100% working !!!

I understand Windows has to deal with a load more issues but surely things on the whole should work properly even if there are minor glitches,. !!!

That MS has to deal with millions of different hardware configurations and that makes it impossible to make the OS work reliably everywhere is total BS and just an excuse for incompetence. I can install Windows on 10 100% identical machines, where only difference is the serial number. Following exact install procedure on the machines will almost certainly yield at least one, that does not work properly. I've had this happen so many times already.

I did a clean install of 28020.1371 and the bug with the colors on the search flyout is not there yet.
It was clearly added with some screwed up experimental feature.
Hard to isolate which one. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

Getting weirder every day, now on these 2 machines the Search flyout looks fine with the same Color setting that I had yesterday.
Seems like they may have reverted back the experimental change that was causing the white on white, now it is white on dark and clearly normal.
I hate these experiments they do without warnings. 😵‍💫🤬🤷‍♂️

I just checked for updates and rebooted a couple of times and the problem disappeared on this machine too. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

What is the Canary Channel for, if not for experiments?

For an experiment that goes wrong Microsoft can fix their mistakes using Known Issue Rollback.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

Maybe they should rollback to 8.1, remove the apps and apply Aeroglass. What we have today is just a bloated OS full of mostly useless trash, no wonder there's so many problems.

All they need to do is notify when they make those changes so that we can test and feedback.
The way they do it without any warning will just get the insiders to stop testing their crap for free. 🤬🤷‍♂️

The whole point of Canary isn't just to 'trail blaze new features', it is also a critical testing ground for Microsoft to test under the hood platform and system changes.
