Changes and improvements gradually being rolled out​

[General]​

  • Improved reliability of explorer.exe when closing the input switcher, and when switching between multiple desktops.

[Storage]​

  • We’ve updated the dialog when creating a Dev Drive to now support specifying the size in GB instead of only MB. This has also been added when changing the size of volumes under Settings > System > Storage.

[Fonts]​

  • The Times New Roman font family is updated to improve the rendering of combining diacritical marks across Greek and Cyrillic scripts. This update provides more accurate and visually consistent text by addressing mark positioning issues. As a result, readability is improved, rendering inconsistencies are reduced, and support for global language users working with Greek and Cyrillic text is strengthened.

  • Many features in the Experimental (26H1) channel are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.

I see a new problem, after this update to 28020.2149 I can no longer boot to the recovery environment.
If I hit Shift + Restart it tries to boot to the recovery environment (I see the typical message "Please Wait") but instead of booting WinRE it just goes back and boots the main installed OS of Windows 11.
Another MS mess. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

Well, it's not really surprising though, I mean if you want to experiment, you go all the way to the 29xxxxx.
I am really unsure about the purpose of 2 branches where very little innovation takes place.
I am glad you are happy with that build though.

As I said in post #5, with 28020.2149, if I hit Shift + Restart it gets to the WinRe as expected, but it fails to open WinRe menus when I hit "Repair my PC", after a few seconds it reboots the main OS instead. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know if you mentioned this. Does it work if Secure Boot is disabled?

Il looks like a similar bug that they have in the latest MCT USB Installation media 26200.8457. That fails also with Secure boot disabled similar to this WinRE.
Looks like they are propagating the bugs instead of fixing them. 😵‍💫🤬🤷‍♂️

I think I see what they have changed. They modified the WinRE flow to eliminate the 1st menu "Choose your keyboard layout" and by doing that they added this new bug that shows up in 28020.2149 WinRE and MCT 26200.8457 "Repair my PC" in both cases they end up rebooting the main OS instead of showing the next UI menus for the recovery.
The installation media built from uup-dump does not have this problem because they did not add this change in the WinRE flow.

It may run well on your Intel hardware, but it's not intended for it. The 28000 series is based on 26H1, and very few of us have the 'select new silicon' (aka Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 series) to benefit from any new features being developed specifically for this hardware.

Windows 11, version 26H1 is a scoped release​

  • Windows 11, version 26H1 will only be available on new devices with select new silicon as they come to market in early 2026.
  • Windows 11, version 26H1 is not offered as an in-place update from Windows 11, version 24H2 or 25H2 on existing devices.

The future successor to 25H2 (and 26H2, which will just be 25H2 with an enablement package) is the other Canary channel, the 29000 series. That's the one I'm running now. The clue is in the name: Experimental (Future Platforms).

It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

No reason to go back to Win10, your 7th gen i7 should have no problems running Win11.

I run Insider builds on two of my laptops, multi-booting as native boot .vhdx with 25H2 as their primary OS. One is a supported device, the other is my unsupported System Two with its 1st gen i5. I have both of them on the 29000 series Canary channel.

So am I ;) My System Two has been running Windows 11 as its primary OS since October 2021, and is now on 25H2.

I run Insider builds on two of my laptops, multi-booting as native boot .vhdx with 25H2 as their primary OS. One is a supported device, the other is my unsupported System Two with its 1st gen i5. I have both of them on the 29000 series Canary channel.


So am I ;) My System Two has been running Windows 11 as its primary OS since October 2021, and is now on 25H2.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
