Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration

Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices started to expire in June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on consumer and non-managed business devices over the past several months. Devices that haven’t received the newer certificates will continue to start and operate normally, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. Updated certificates will continue to be delivered through Windows Update in the coming months. For more information, see Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.

End of updates
Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Highlights​

This update is available through two release phases: gradual rollout and normal rollout. A gradual rollout delivers an update in phases, so features reach devices over time instead of all at once, meaning availability varies by device. A normal rollout is the broad release to all eligible devices at the same time, usually when it reaches general availability (GA).

    • New! This update improves the reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane. The pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find and review at a glance.
    • New! The update addresses an issue that could clear the address bar contents when entering edit mode by clicking near the right side of the address bar.

  • [Camera] This update addresses an issue where the built-in camera might stop working in the Camera app and other apps that use the camera.
  • [File History] This update addresses an issue where File History might fail to back up or restore files to an external drive or network location. Affected devices might incorrectly display a “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive is connected and working properly.
  • [System Monitor (Sysmon)]
    • This update fixes an issue with header validation for executable files. Truncated or malformed files could cause unpredictable memory use and result in unreliable tampering detection.
    • This update fixes an issue with the Sysmon file system filter driver. If the archive directory failed to open during file monitoring, closing an uninitialized handle could cause a stop error.
    • This update fixes an issue with process tampering detection. Sysmon incorrectly generated Event ID 25 alerts for the Windows Session Manager (smss.exe) process.

Known issues in this update​

Symptoms

After installing the September 8, 2026, Windows security update (KB5124008), or later updates, some Credential Guard protected machine accounts might lose their secure channel with an on-premises Active Directory (AD) domain. Users might then be unable to sign in interactively with valid domain credentials and might receive a message stating that the trust relationship between the device and the domain failed. Offline sign-in using previously cached credentials might continue to work. AD replication and AD services on the domain controllers are not affected.

This issue occurs because KB5124008 and later updates enable the Machine Identity Isolation feature. While the update does not directly enable Machine Identity Isolation enforcement, it does cause Windows to begin honoring any existing or policy-provisioned settings that enabled Machine Identity Isolation enforcement. However, this feature is only supported for environments connected to domain controllers running at a Windows Server 2025 Domain Functional Level (DFL) and above. The feature should be disabled elsewhere. Any devices previously configured to use Machine Identity Isolation that are not connected to Windows Server 2025 domain controllers will experience this issue and will need to disable the feature.

Workaround

Important: This section contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, back it up and make sure that you know how to restore it if a problem occurs. For more information, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

To work around this issue, disable Machine Identity Isolation using the same management method that was used to enable it. Choose the applicable option below:
  1. If Machine Identity Isolation was enabled by Intune policy, disable Machine Identity Isolation with Intune.
  2. If Machine Identity Isolation was enabled by Group Policy, disable Machine Identity Isolation with Group Policy.
  3. If Machine Identity Isolation was enabled directly in the registry, use these steps to disable it:
    • On the Windows 11, version 24H2 or 25H2 device, locate the following registry paths:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MachineIdentityIsolation

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceGuard\MachineIdentityIsolation
    • For either of these registry keys, if the value of MachineIdentityIsolation is set to 2, change it to:

      MachineIdentityIsolation = 0
After you disable Machine Identity Isolation, restart the device.

Then reset the secure channel using the following command:

Test-ComputerSecureChannel -Repair -Credential (Get-Credential)

Resolution

Microsoft plans to resolve this issue in a future Windows update by temporarily preventing Machine Identity Isolation enforcement while improvements are made to the feature.

Symptoms

After installing the September 8, 2026, Windows security update, some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices might fail to start or produce audio. Affected devices might experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The device displays an error in Device Manager: "This device cannot start (Code 10)."
  • No audio output.
  • Volume controls are unresponsive or remain at zero.
  • Sound settings are unresponsive or unavailable.
This issue is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices.

Resolution

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will update this documentation when more information is available.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update​

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment​

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note: The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

Everything inside 26H2 will remain the same as in 25H2 already was, except for some new change that becomes active. (not active now in 25H2)
All ComponentStore packages (DISM packagelist) will remain at *.26100.xxxx.* and Winver, settings-system only has to change it's result from 25H2 Build 26200.xxxx into 26H2 Build 26300.xxxx. Just like they did before with the change from 24H2 to 25H2.

This "Update" is just 174Kb in size and only needs 1 reboot. It will be released around or before 13 October.

Reference my post #165, can no one reproduce this issue. It was a long day yesterday resetting windows store, doing repair/update with all same results. Did not go back to my 'normal' until I rolled back. I'm nervous about doing forward this mess with log-a-geddn when mearly opening Settings->storage, or opening disk-cleanup. Not willing to deal with that going forward. It appears in Event ID application as ID 4

I just did both, (Settings - System - Storage, and Disk Cleanup, I did not get any Event ID Error's or Warning's.

Thanks for the info, are you on 26200.9550 ? Your info says 26300.9450. '9450' does not have the problem, that's what I rolled back to.

As do I. I make a daily Macrium Reflect X image very night alternating on two 4 TB Samsung Portable T9 SSDs. I always have 30 days of image backups. The offsite component of my Backup Strategy is managed in real-time using my 1 TB of cloud OneDrive.

It really don't need a backup. It is just a bunch of switches that are now disabled switch over to enabled. No packages will be updated or changed.
But for save keepings. I advise you do.

Examined if vivetool /export /import functionality could be an option. (In a VM) Nope! You can't use this!
- I exported everything to before.bin and changed 1 item from disabled to enabled.
- Tried to import it again with vivetool /import /filename:before.bin /store:runtime
- Exported it again to back.bin.
Binary showed the content to many differences between the 2 files to be reliable even after an reboot.

Agreed, no backup required unless you’re already running some unstable system with a history of failed updates. I’ve just in the last 25 minutes preceding this post updated my laptop with the enablement package following my earlier main PC update. Again, a completely trouble free update.

On Disk Management I see this:-

As far as I know, disk management has never shown the 16 MB MSR partition. This is normal. If you use Macrium, it also shows the 16 MB MSR partition.

I did a restore to 26200.9457 from 26200.9550 which was causing floods of logs in Event Viewer. I just discovered that somewhere during all the troubleshooting , with inplace restore/update , and doing the restore to previous build I lost my winRE partition. How did that happen? Now the big question, how to replace/restore my WinRE/Recovery partition on the C drive

Ran this and i seems there is a winRE, but does not show in disk management like it used to. Pretty sure it was shown as 'recovery'

In an elevated Command prompt, run reagentc /info

That will tell you if it's there.

Easiest way to get the Recovery partition back is to restore it from a previous drive image

I just ran the command and its shows it there, enabled. I don't know how to get it to display , I just read that its now hidden. Anyway to unhide it ?

Not sure what you mean by "hidden".

If it had a name, you can use a tool like MiniTool Partition Wizard, and give it a name (a Label).

However, it won't show in the upper windows in Disk Management.

I had to expand winRE recently , raised it to 1gig. this is what diskpart shows, and I'm not sure I see it there.
