Laptop slower after todays update?

I check for updates regularly and install them when there is one. this one took awhile and after restarting it was on a black screen with just the cursor visible. forced restart again and it works but seems slower. should i not install all updates? it's not a high end laptop. it's windows 11. maybe its just me. this was the update 2024-09 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043145)

Preview updates can be problematic. I never install them.

The 'Stable' Patch Tuesday update will be available next Tuesday 8th October so you have two options: -
  1. Do nothing until the stable update next Tuesday and install it. Hopefully this will fix the issue.
  2. Uninstall the Preview update and install the stable update next Tuesday. This would be my choice.

I have no proof of this, this is merely from my own observations, but it seems to me like the preview updates are often more stable than the final Patch Tuesday updates. This is because the preview updates contain just bug fixes and feature updates while the actual Patch Tuesday update also includes all the security updates. It seems to me that it is typically the security updates that cause issues.

Still, I think that wiganken is correct: I would suggest uninstalling that update just to see if makes a difference. If your performance returns after uninstalling that update, then you can have a high level of confidence that the update was somehow responsible.

I have never been convinced an update removal completely removes all traces, so I always make an image backup (full, differential or incremental) before any cumulative update so I know all traces of the update have been removed by restoring the image backup.

A usual cause of delays after an update is because the graphics drivers have been replaced. Make sure you install latest official graphics drivers from manufacturer and see if it makes any difference.

Before doing anything else...check Task Manager and look for any process that uses a lot of resources. If your CPU usage is about 2-6% or lower at all times, then the slowness is caused by something else than some Windows post install maintenance process.

It is common that a lot of stuff is happening in the background after a CU. So patiens is required...things like File Indexer can be triggered to reindex your whole drive and many other tasks...

That's actually a really good idea because some components simply cannot be removed. Remember, the Latest Cumulative Update may contain an SSU (Servicing Stack Update). Once installed, the SSU cannot be uninstalled, but the rest of the LCU can be uninstalled.

If you want to avoid a time consuming full backup of your disk, you can at least enable System Restore and create a restore point before installing any cumulative upgrade. If anything goes wrong, you can go back to the restore point. Some times it is faster to use a restore point to go back than restore your system from a full backup.
