Briefly, what I need is a means of using WiFi to connect a USB output on a device in one room to a USB input in another room. Distance and wiring would make cable impractical. If you are interested in the why, read on!

I manage the village web site which at one point featured real time weather information used by various people wanting to make use of local beach and cliffs. The weather station, a Davis one, stored the data and it periodically sent the data via a USB cable to the PC which in turn processed it and added it to the web site where it was displayed. The problem was that the PC, an old one, ran 24/7 to do so and the power consumption/year was near £100. The village parish council paid but after the PC died it was not considered worthwhile finding another and paying £100 a year to provide weather data mainly used by hang gliders.
I am now considering an alternative and that is to use the PC I use for other things to do the same thing and go for periodic updates of the weather pages on the web site. Cost is already incurred for other reasons, the PC is on almost all day, and near real time data would be adequate for most users. The room where the data gathering display module is, is too far from my study where the PC is, not to mention the need to conceal the cable. The module data output is USB 2.0 as is the PC input. So I need a two gizmos - one to connect to the weather module USB port, send the data via WiFi to USB port on the computer.
A pair of AP Link Nano Wireless MU-Mimo USB 2.0 should work, unless someone has experience of something better.

It is a bit difficult to help, until you explain and list exactly the hardware and software setup you had before the PC broke down.

@Sigurd

Assuming you meant TP-Link ( not AP Link), I had great luck with one of those a while back.
I'm now using internal Wifi cards, but that's irrelevant to your question.

The reason I didn't give the details SliceDiceE asks for is because it wasn't relevant. Same reason that I asked the question first, and the explanation afterwards for anyone interested rather than take up their time.
The only thing that I am looking for is a way of using WiFi instead of a cable to transfer data from box A to box B.
TP Link (sorry - not AP) looks a possibility. Others may know better ways.

Is the Davis weather station capable of connecting to a network? If it is, you could configure the PC (plus WiFi adapter) in an ad hoc network.

If not, plugging a WiFi adapter into it probably won't give you what you want.

There are wireless USB extenders. They wireless simulate a long USB cable. They are much more expensive than a cheap USB WiFi adapter.

I have a Davis 6163 Weather Station that is about 150 feet away from my computer. It is connected wirelessly using a Davis WeatherLink Live 6100 that sits next to my router. The 6100 connects wirelessly using RF to the weather station 150 feet away. The Davis WeatherLink Live 6100 then connects to my router and my computer then connects to the weather station through my router. It works beautifully. If anyone wants to see the results of that connection, I do a feed to the Weather Channel Weather Underground. Click on this link, and you can see the real-time weather at my house on my weather station. It's updated real-time every few seconds.

It should be noted that using the Davis WeatherLink Live 6100 eliminates the need for a dedicated computer running 24/7. That solves your problem, but at the cost of additional hardware.

Maybe get a WiFi-included Raspberry Pi and use something like VirtualHere.

There are wireless USB extenders. They wireless simulate a long USB cable. They are much more expensive than a cheap USB WiFi adapter.
I think I should have asked a more basic question.
If a piece of equipment outputs its data to an app in a computer using a USB port at each end via a standard USB cable, would a wireless extender at each end do the same regardless of the data format? If the answer is yes, then a couple of TP Link Nano Wireless MU-Mimo USB 2.0 sould work.

Gary - The weather station is an old one - a Davis Vantage Pro 2 with data logger. The software is Weatherlink 5.6. Originally bought for a village school project and to add data to village web site until H&S prevented me from going on to the flat roof to clean out the rain gauge which tended to be used as a toilet by seagulls. So it was moved to my house which is reasonably well situated for it. Worked fine until the old laptop I used for it died. Distance between laptop and data logger in those days was close enough to allow use of a plain USB cable.

Thanks for responding to my question even though you felt it was incomplete. I seem to have nevertheless got my answer in respect of the only affordable option..
