Pretty much as the title suggests. I have a HP Omen 16 laptop and the trackpad has never functioned properly since day one (now on my second laptop with the same issue). I've done the usual driver updates to try and resolve this, but I noticed that the i2c driver is from 21/06/2001, and despite multiple searches I can't find a newer version of it anywhere. Is there a newer version available, and if so where can I get it, so that I can at least try it.

Trackpad has never worked properly since day 1. The same with the new replacement one as well. 2/3 of left side becomes sluggish and then unresponsive and the left button also becomes unresponsive. Lots of people with problem but HP won't acknowledge or fix it.
I think you're looking for the wrong driver, here's a video that explains how to find the correct device driver.

In this video, i will help identify the device and find the correct drivers for it.

For reference to others with similar issue (touchpad doesn't work properly). In most laptops Windows find the appropriate driver automatically, no extra software is needed. If you have installed the touchpad driver for the wrong model it usually doesn't work at all or it has some issues. Connect an external mouse to control the computer and uninstall any touchpad driver from Settings, Applications or from Control Panel, Programs and Features. This is like Synaptic touchpad or similar. Restart and the touchpad should work OK again. If you want to install the touchpad software to tweak sensitivity, gestures etc, make sure you download the correct version from manufacturer support site. If Windows 11 is not listed, try any earlier 64-bit version from Vista 64-bit to Windows 10 64-bit. All these should work fine in Windows 11. For very old software (such as Vista) right-click the installer and run as Administrator. An alternative is to use an automatic driver utility such as Snappy Driver Installer, but there is always a small possibility to install an incorrect touchpad driver and lose touchpad functionality. I prefer to manually download the driver to make sure is the latest and the most compatible. I also select the custom installation when applicable to make sure all features are enabled, not just the basic features.

In most laptops Windows find the appropriate driver automatically, no extra software is needed. If you have installed the touchpad driver for the wrong model it usually doesn't work at all or it has some issues.
If you read my original post, you'd have seen where I stated that this was happening on a brand new laptop. That was replaced with another brand new one and that too had the exact same issues i.e. after a few minutes the left side of the trackpad would become unresponsive, with it progressing to about 2/3 of the way across the trackpad, as well as the left-click becoming unresponsive as well. I wen through numerous iterations of removing and reinstalling the drivers, as well as multiple reboot and restart iterations between them. The i2C driver that I asked about was because it was the only driver left that I couldn't find an updated driver for, considering the 'latest' one is from 2001. This wasn't a case of just throwing every trackpad driver at it until I found one that worked. The reality is that both trackpads on two brand new laptops were defective. So far, after several hours over the last two days of casual use browsing the internet with it, it is still working properly, so I can now set about reinstalling all my apps... and retire my old laptop.

I posted to also help others in similar cases. I wasn't referring specifically at your case. However if you have the same issue again you can try Snappy Driver Installer to see if it can find a driver for your case. If the hardware is faulty either the driver won't work or there will not be any driver available.
