Macrium free and other editions of Macrium have a Winpe type of system in it -- if you use the command console. So by entering diskpart, attaching a vdisk e .g disk1.vhdx you can then restore an image to this vdisk - even if the image was copied from a non vhdx file originally.
Do the other alternative programs do this . AFAIK there doesn't seem to be any mention of this facility in the available literature.
I know there are other ways to do this -- but it's more manual -- Macrium makes it easy also via VIBOOT too if "reverse cloning" a VM to a physical machine -- "V2P" conversion.
