Macrium Disk Image/Restore Question

My question is for basic information for when restoring from Macrium backups.

My main computer system contains 2 SSD, one is the C Drive for the OS and the other a D Drive that contains User folder. All user Profiles are stored in the D Drive. This was set up during install with an auto unattend xml file.

I have and keep images of both drives, each as a separate image. My question is this...

If my C Drive fails which contains my OS, can merely restoring the C Drive to a new SSD have me back up and running without touching the D Drive?

Or, would I need to image both the C and D Drive together?

If more information is needed, please let me know.

Probably. But if you have anything on D that is referenced in the Windows Registry, you might have problems.

Surely it would be sensible to make one image backup of everything. You can still restore partitions/disks one at a time.

It depends on what you have on the D drive: if your %USERPROFILE%, %APPDATA% and its subdirs are on D (containing important settings for installed programs including system apps), you'll need it.
Best thing IMHO is to keep them isolated, and use D: as a "DATA" storage just to install programs/games/media... Of course some programs (installed in D:) won't work but you should be able to boot even without D:.

I don't see why. If they restore an image of their C: drive all of their settings will be on the new drive. It would be different if they did a clean install.

Yes. The only thing you would need to verify after a restore is that the drive letter assignment of your storage drive is still D:

I conversely think about a situation that might arise if my data drive is lost so I have a slightly different take on what data I store on my storage drive. I have moved Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music, and Videos location to D (all these I can operate without in an emergency) but I always choose to keep desktop and appdata as well as my installed apps on C with my OS.

It depends how the restore program works. Most likely it will only adjust the osletter ( in your case that is C ) to the new volume value so the previously assigned non-os letter D will still reference the sig and partition the other disk.

Interesting concept as well. Sometimes I wonder if it's just as simple to keep everything on the C Drive and keep data backups instead. I guess personal preference and each has their way of doing things.

I moved my User folders so when I make backup images of my C: drive they are smaller. I have my Documents and Pictures on OneDrive, My Downloads, Music and Videos on drive D:. I left the Desktop on the C: drive.
