It may be a case of hardware shaking out to where there are only a couple of standards in use. One of the things that made it tough for OS/2 was all the various bus types. There was VEESA, Front side bus, Microchannel, as well as ISA, EISA and some others I forget. I told the guy building my 486 to use ISA. It would be slow but work with everything. The case I cited earlier I made the image using a Windows program and tried to restore using the same program while the Windows system was running. Unfortunately Vista made some changes to NTFS that the software had not caught up with. The software made a hidden partition with the rescue stuff and image so you could quickly boot into it and restore. This quick restore took 9 hours. Yet another case of stuff that should work but didn't. :)

I have the Macrium Reflect Rescue on its own dedicated usb flash drive. I have another usb flash drive with Ventoy that has Windows and Linux Mint isos on it. I am thinking of moving the MR Rescue to the Ventoy flash drive. Is it as easy as just copying it over from one flash drive to the other.... will it be recognized by Ventoy as an iso…… will it work ok?

Better to leave it alone, then if one usb drive packs up, you still got the other. You could try copying the files before you delete them from the other drive and check they work.

Yeah, I thought about that…. I.e., putting all the eggs in one basket thing. Now just wondering if Ventoy would recognize Rescue as another iso? Maybe I will try it sometime.

No. it won't.

If you want to add the MR rescue to your Ventoy usb, then open Macrium Reflect, select Rescue, and choose the option to make an ISO file. That you'll be able to use with your Ventoy.

The Macrium resque-ISO works perfectly with Ventoy , using it from the start , Ventoy with Macrium-ISO ! :wink:

In your example then, the iso file would be copied from the TEMP\MacriumRescue.iso file to the Ventoy usb, and that is all, right? Easy as that.

Yes, easy as that. Use it the same way in Ventoy as all your other ISOs.

On some PCs, ventoy only boots the Rescue Drive in 800x600 format - it is a well known (bios related) "bug".

You can still use it but tthe finish button is offscreen, so you have to drag the windows to the left to click the button.

For the cost of usb drives, I find ventoy to be too much of a PITA keeping it updated.

Ventoy is handy.

Another way is to add multiple bootable wims to the sources folder on a bootable usb you already have and add a bcd entry for each.

copy the existing winpe bcd entry and just change the name and decription to match the name of the wim file you added. Pretty easy.

you could change the name of macrium boot.wim from e.g your lenovo laptop to lets say macrium-lenovo.wim
and change the name of the macrium boot.wim from your asus z790 desktop to lets say macrium-z790.wim

Or any names you like. Copy them into the sources folder. Copy the existing winpe entry in usbstick\efi\microsft\boot\bcd and change the names in the bcd entry. Then you can choose whichever from the boot menu.

I have been doing it for as long as I can remember.

I've only created 1 USB rescue media for Macrium and I have been able to use that same USB key on all of my machines at my house that I have run Macrium on.

You probably can. But last time I looked there is a drivers folder in the macrium boot.wim which was gathered from the machine it was created on, that it annoyingly attempts to load. Might not matter depending on what is required by the particular machine.

I have multiple winpes for 11,10,7 and a few others all in one sources folder on one usb sick . I also have some programs on the usb stick which the winpes I made link to . Those programs run off the usb which is writable and persistent so they can easily be changed/updated/added to etc.

Nothing to do with macrium. It is just an alternative to ventoy so multiple bootable wims can live on one usb easily.

And it is easier to add/change those programs ( or even the bootable wim ) on the usb than rebuilding an iso and swapping it with the previous one on ventoy.
